What killed fixed gear?

  • 1x on a gravel bike is as closed as it gets to fixed these days.

Must be the naffest bike you can ride at the moment. Closely followed by those 26" abominations. Saw someone on a fixed Cinelli in Leyton this afternoon, and they didn't look like a lame, middle-class, gravel riding fuck. Ride on, sweet prince...

    #seen

But also, fuck off, my 26" singlespeeds are way cooler than that 2008 fakenger shit ever was.

    :-)

  • I've actually been low level annoyed by this thread and my name check on it, all day.

I ride fixed. On a stupid bike that I built around a dazzle cam saddle, with frame, fork and most parts sourced on the forum. It has the brakes that didn't make it onto DBAD and an arrospoke FFS.

I have a stupid mohican which is occasionally pink or blue or red.

The last forum bike ride that I organised was ridden fixed, by me.

I recently did a bike tag of a bike pile outside the John Snow.

I don't think I could be living in the glorious past any more if I tried.

When was the last time you rode fixed?

I realise that I am biting and the comment was probably a throw away.

    But, there you go.

  • Do you need a hug?

  • Whisper me

  • u r true fixie legend matt. don't listen them

  • I was just trolling. Jonny Fitz received some heavy trolling at some point, I just cast a line. We all know Hatbeard killed the forum anyway.

I'd rather have old fashioned BEEF thanks.

  • Vegan beef substitute is rubbish

  • It has the brakes that didn't make it onto DBAD

    You're... proud of this?

  • I've seen the razzle dazzle camo saddle spokalypse.

It's like a badly remembered article about fixed bikes from 2008.

  • @Sparky wrote that article

  • I don’t know what killed it but it sounds to me the likes of @mashton are keeping the dream alive. I wouldn’t be surprised if @Peter_Carter is still riding the same fixed gear winter trainer he’s had since 1983 and putting in more fixed miles than the rest of us put together.
My neighbour still rides an old langster and wears an ancient bagaboo courier bag. I’ve never asked but I’m gonna assume he was on here back in the days of rep.

I was lucky enough to see an original and unmolested 14bike co build in baby pink with matching spok in someone’s design studio recently. Looked like it hadn’t been ridden since 2011. It was a true shut up and take my money build in every sense.

I’m gonna have to dust off my skidder and flip that flop back to fixed....

    Oops. The BRAKE.

    Two brakes are death.

At what time will the "retrofixed" revival start? When did old MTBs go from old to desirable?

    Preach.

Soft road bikes and fucketty hybrids ideal for making interesting routes boring. The antithesis of track bikes on the road.

    ✊🏽

  • When did old MTBs go from old to desirable?

When all the gravel bikes so heavily marketed these last 2 years were also simultaneously unavailable to buy these last 2 years.

  • I was referring to the dawn of retrobike and all that stuff, when the industry was marketing full-suspension, overly heavy, overly complicated bikes and many people decided they'd rather have an old Klein, Merlin, Bontrager, Rocky Mountain etc. Today if you want a decent bike you seemingly have to pay a few grand for hydraulic disc brake graveltastic dropperposty shininess, when a light, quality steel old fixed/single speed with 25c tyres will be more fun around London, far cheaper and in the eyes of this old hipster, cooler.

  • I genuinely miss some of my early fixehbieks. They were all a bit scruffy but they all had more weekly miles than anything I’ve built since the apocalypse.

I don’t feel that much older than I did in 2009 but I doubt I’ve got the balls to fall out of a pub at 11pm and being completely on board with the idea of riding to Brighton shitfaced and brakless just to see the sun rise.

Feeling all nostalgic but my god we had some proper irl laughs on here back then.

  • I have room in my life for both.

    (n+1) + 4eva

  • I was telling someone the other day about how I missed my old Soma (that fucking wet, freezing Dunwich Dynamo!) and I dragged out a T.I. Raleigh jersey to sell that I never actually wore when I owned the T.I. Raleigh track bike.

I still ride the Condor to the pub and wobble home on it. It has a USE shock post on it now... because I want the frame finally snapping to be a real surprise...

  • What happened to the Cuntster? Gotta be too 5 all time forum bikes..
