Another (arguably less exciting) addition to the pile is this custom stem cap... Somewhere at the beginning of the thread I posted the design for it but I never took a photo of the finished thing. It says GARUDA, which is a creature in Hindu and Buddhist mythology that flies around with the gods on his back. He appears a lot in Indonesia and Thailand where me and my girlfriend spent much of 2019 travelling and working... it's also the name of a metal band I used to be in!

Looking for bottom bracket recommendations:
- Compatible with Sram GPX / 24mm
- BLACK!
- under £100 (ie: not CK money)
- Prioritising durability over weight etc.
I would really like it if Wheels Manufacturing did one in black but they don't.
The idiots!Any suggestions?
- Compatible with Sram GPX / 24mm

I was going to say Hope, but agreeing with amey causes me real physical pain
-
• #282
you should say Hope Ceramic
-
• #283
Do they still make that?
-
• #284
you got £650 ee brakes but skimping on the bb? ck bb is like 3 times less?
-
• #285
Yeah, pretty much!
It's not like I have a huge amount of budget left after those brakes, and I'm gambling that a perfectly decent BB can be had for less than the price of a CK.

I'm betting that a decent enough BB can be had for less than the price of a CK.
Sram

Do they make them in black?
-
• #288
seconded . those 20£ basic sram perform really well for the price... even if you keep one for only 1 year, that's 10 years of riding before spending CK money :)

Also - any love for Praxis Works?
I was talking to Matthew about Hope hubs yesterday (which I currently use without any issues) and he was quite down on the them. Apparently their bearing seals are not so great... I wonder if that is also true of the BBs?

Weird... Sram do seem to offer them in black after all. I have no idea how I got so far without realising this.

I just had to replace the bearings on a PW BB after about 2/3k (dry) miles. I assume that only happened due to my overzealous washing routine but, still, not great. this is the second PW BB I'm on - admittedly the first had about 2k (wet) + 3k (turbo) miles on it but I thought BBs were meant to run for about 5-8k miles, if not more

imo, the positive with Hope hubs is the quality and finish, they just look way batter than say dt350. The bad, they are heavy.
-
• #293
i would defnitly give it a go, i have had some small creaking issues sometimes, but that was due to being not so thorough with install

Heard bad things about praxis BB, inc from mechanics. That’s the first bad thing about hope though

LOL, Hope stainless bearings are brilliant. However it doesn seem very trendy for instagram/artisan framebuilders to knock them. Users generally love them.

Cheers for all the info all, much appreciated.
So it appears that just because Sram make them in black doesn't mean anyone actually sells them - I can't find one for sale anywhere online (after a very cursory search).... so that might be an obstacle.
Have asked Matthew for suggestions and will suggest Hope.
Praxis Works sound rubbish, thanks for the heads-up.Why the fuck don't WM just make them in black?!
Why is there not a huge public protest about this?
Does nobody CARE?!etc

Yeah stock is a bigger issue than reliability right now!
-
• #298
Too true.
Bring back 2018, that's what I say. -

I thinks Wheels is selling a black GXP bb, in fact I bought one some time ago. ;-)

Just get hope . Yes a bit heavy but never had a problem and used stuff for 20 years+ . I would trust them with my children if i had any.
