We have a nanny training school near us (norland) and if your kids are young enough you can get a free student nanny. We did it for a year.we had 3 different nannies over that spell. They couldn’t legally be left alone with your kid when they were training, so they were pretty useless tbh and we were kinda guilted into it. The nannies were expecting to make probs £30k ish for a standard job with accommodation travel and food included. Obvs there were bigger salaries to be had. There were stories of mega-rich and royals and horror stories of parents who saw their kids for an hour once a fortnight.

Surely they could just suck it up and deal with their own kids for an hour a fortnight?

TBF that's me guessing and it sounds like I'm way off.
Yes, that's pretty much it. You're paying for professional childcare. They won't do all the practical house/family chores an au pair helps out with.
Last time I spoke to someone who employed one I was in my teens and it wasn't really appropriate to ask what they paid. But they did reference them having to have their own studio in the house.

Around 10 years ago the going rate in London was £400/month cash in hand, a car, accommodation and food.

Truer word something something jest... yes they are for people who can't afford a nanny.
Pretty sure nannies were the best part of £40-50k when I was a kid. Can't imagine you'd
get much change from £100k today, so quite a few people probably fall into that category. You are Jacob Rees-Mogg and AICMFP

Nannies in London earn a bunch because they work 12 hour days. Hourly wage isn't great.

My daughter did it 10 years ago for an architect in Putney. £75 + food and accommodation and an oyster card. This was for getting the kids ready for school, taking and picking up after. Making the kids meals and getting them ready for bed.
Extra money earnt sitting when they went out on a night, had a few holidays with them Summer Villas and Winter chalets.Of course talked to all the other Nannies outside the schools and in the parks, all the tittle tattle from those that looked after celebs kids and the big wages to be had by the uniformed college trained Nannies.

The one we're going to use over Summer is £25/hr. Which initially made me reel (when thinking of paying it) but is really only a £50k job IF they were able to work full time. And that's before all the other expenses they wouldn't have as a salaried employee.

Doesn't count if it's already here!

PM me if you ever want a trilingual male nanny at short notice. My going rate is £55,000 annum pro rata, a modest but impactful investment in your child’s future.

That's what we've already got! I'll stick the £5k in her trust fund or buy a new watch or something, to keep in the spirit of the thread.

To be clear, he'll be doing about 6 or 7 days, not the full year.

Apologies I misspoke. With lufguss mates’ rates discount, which is considerable, the fee is £55,000 annum, so it’s an even better deal for you. Please PM for my list of ad-on services, including:
-Introduction to French gastronomy and philosophy
-Stock market principles for toddlers
-Sailing lessons;)

Personally I see no issue with it. You’re paying to take that time for you (and I assume your partner) to relax and enjoy yourself knowing that your child is with someone competent and trustworthy. Is it a good chunk of change? No doubt, but the market supplies what the market demands.

-Sailing lessons
Yachts or dingies? I could be in the market if the former, and happily no need for anyone to refer me to the golf club thread as we are here already.

Don't teachers have ~1-2-30 and get half the salary? What should teachers be getting paid by this scale?
-
• #1798
I never said anything about teachers.
-
• #1799
Neither do I (unless that was aimed at someone else), and we will be working, rather than enjoying ourselves.

I know. My point was 1-1 with a young person for £50k seems like a great deal compared with 1-30 for £30k.
(Ignore me, I'm just venting because my partner is undervalued/overworked. Not directed at you)
