I was reading that this morning. I thought that as the teams are MASSIVE there must be quite a few players and wondered how many others are feeling like they need to be closeted. Google tells me there are 1,696 active players in the NFL. 1 is a great start, hoping there are others who were just waiting for someone else to take the first step.
The "support" from management was barely OK. "We don't care if he's gay", I don't think it will be an easy place for queer people (in both types of football) until there is a more proactive stance taken against homophobia/transphobia. Less of "it's OK to be gay" and more of "it's not OK to be homophobic".
Well, this is progress, though it's perhaps telling that the uber-macho NFL has an out gay player before the Prem:
