I did a few shifts on the markdown gun back in my 6th form days back before the reductions were automated and could do as we pleased. I didn’t have the stones to take the piss too much but often had other staff members with whole weekly shops reduced to pennies come through my till.
My main gig was fag kiosk/customer services/store announcer. Also good potential for loopy customers and shady dealings.

A mate of mine used to come round for a smoke with a little roll of blank markdown stickers that could be applied to anything in the store! Good times :)

Swapping price stickers on items is as old as the hills. It's also still a form of theft.
The newer markdown stickers are also barcodes that encode the details of the original item and the price.
However there's more and more connection between the stickers that are produced and what gets scanned at the till, and given most of the tills (even the self service ones) now contain cameras you'd be a brave person to try and play the system when they start to notice markdown barcodes being scanned that haven't been officially issued in the store.
Anyway, memes.

It probably is as old as the hills hence ...
I miss the old days before the introduction of marking down sticker gun technology

Waitrose. Used to slip low ticket item sleeve (bombay potatoes) over high ticket item trays (the main course) all the time.

As a student working in Sainsbury’s, I would marvel at the riot I could cause in the veg aisle with the pricing gun. Restaurant people go batshit. That fence is a good idea

Former markdown gun wielder checking in, back in my day you could use your discretion but you had to use it wisely as snitches on the tills would be all over it, remember one mad lad marking down a massive free range turkey for his mum to 5p

Not on the self-service tills unless the weights match too.

Phony reductions was small fry dodginess when I worked in a supermarket.

This is why we used to weigh bottle of whisky through as carrots on the self service checkouts in the Tesco at seven sisters.

No markdown scavenging for me, my friends and I would just go straight for the bins around the back and see what had been put out. We had quite a few donuts courtesy of Sainsbury's back in the day.

Waitrose, at least my nearest one, doesn't have weighed scanned area.

The little Coop on Essex Road in Angel used to be my local and the marking down person there would have a crowd following him and arguing for more off. Once I even saw someone bringing him things and trying to get them marked down
I used to be a markdown person for a couple of years, the worst is when people would haggle,
I’m trying to explain I am controlled by the handset and not autonomous, I cannot give and extra 5p off the bread rolls, they would not believe me, but just call me a discount cop.
