• Are fake Shimano 8 speed cassettes a thing?

No stock in basically any online shop - of 25+ shops on my search, only one has stock. However, loads available on eBay, i.e: Cassette + chain for £18.

I know that fake Dura Ace chains are a thing but HG200 cassettes? Is this likely to be fake?

  • Yup. I put one of my old motorbikes up on eBay last week, starting price of £6k and within 2 hours of the auction going live I got some clown asking if I’d take £4k cash and he’d collect the next day? I asked him why he thought I’d take 2/3 of the starting price within 2 hours of the start of a 10-day auction, and he got all pissy with me. Blocked.

  • Yep. Fake everything.

  • I won an auction for a jersey a few days ago. Today I got a message saying:

    'Hi there!

Thank you so much for purchasing this item - unfortunately it’s sold whilst we are on our family holiday and we don’t return until June 14th.

Are you ok if I post this to you on that date?'

Am I right to be a bit annoyed? Surely you'd know you were on holiday when you put the auction up? And it's not even just a couple of days... what would you do?

  • You have two options:
Say fine. Get the jersey on June 15/16
Say, no thanks. Give me a refund. Don't get the jersey.

You can be annoyed. Unlikely to change the above.

  • Ask for a partial refund, or 100% request free postage, if you paid originally. Not on

  • unfortunately it’s sold whilst we are on our family holiday

we specifically and knowingly arranged this auction to conclude on this exact date

  • Nah could be to that it didn't sell previously and is set to auto relist.

  • Ask for a partial refund, or 100% request free postage, if you paid originally. Not on

That's what I did - and they refunded my postage almost immediately. So as long as I get it once they're back, I'm happy with that outcome. Pleasingly drama free.

  • Easy to assume bad faith on eBay when there actually just a lot of human beings amongst the grifters. Glad it worked out!

  • Sold a watch I inherited on eBay earlier, and then got chased to dispatch same day, which I was going to do anyway, once I got to the post office the buyer messaged me saying that he felt the back wasn’t original (based on photos that were in the listing which I have no way of verifying m, I’ve taken the back off and it’s an original omega back and included pics in the listing) asking me to cancel and refund him so I went home again to resolve before posting.

Asked why he didn’t look at the pictures before bidding he said he only say the watch 2 mins before it ended…

So he spent £1600 on a watch with 2 minutes research and then changed his mind..

This guy is a professional eBayer, with like 30 current listing of musical instruments, and when I pointed out I’ve done nothing wrong and would still be posting he filed a dispute with PayPal stating that I haven’t posted it…

In the end I’ve now said that if he ends the dispute I’ll cancel his purchase but he’s claiming this can’t be done, as accepting the PayPal dispute involves accepting that I’ve done something wrong..

Is what he says true and if I do accept the dispute and refund will it show up on my account? Fundamentally pissed off that if I do relist the watch it now looks suspect and likely hurts the vale of the watch….

  • From my memory of PayPal disputes, the options are: seller agrees with claim, PayPal agrees/disagrees with claim, or buyer drops dispute. This dispute won’t appear on your eBay record, but if you force the dick to accept it he’ll leave some shitty feedback for sure. Even if PayPal decide in your favour, you just know that he’ll raise an issue once the watch is in his possession. Save yourself the time and list again or...

List it in the watch thread here, there’s always interest in Omega and you know the buyer won’t likely be a cunt.

  • when I pointed out I’ve done nothing wrong and would still be posting he filed a dispute with PayPal stating that I haven’t posted it…

100% do not post it to them. They will find a way of getting the refund and that may involve damaging the watch.

It will probably show up if someone searches for completed items but I doubt that’d hurt the price.

  • People are such dicks on EBay. Don’t think I’ll ever want to sell anything of any value there again.

  • 100% do not post it to them. They will find a way of getting the refund and that may involve damaging the watch.

    200%.

  • This guy has fucking left me negative feedback!

He’s a professional ebayer by the look of things and I have his address do
    A) send him a turd in the post
    B) buy all his items in eBay and then ask to cancel them/burn my eBay account
    C) threaten libel

  • Just because he’s a pro ebayer doesn’t mean he’s not also a fraudster.

I’d tell him to fuck off and ask eBay to remove the unfounded comment. The bright side is that you’re not down a watch or your money from this asshole pulling a fast one.

  • If I can share a true story from my childhood: Dad and I are driving home along a US highway, and a black camaro comes screaming up behind him, flashing his high-beams. My dad changes lanes not even turning to look as the dbag overtakes, and he says to me ‘In life you’ll come across idiots like that, and it’s always best to let them go crash somewhere else’. 15 minutes later, we pass the camaro is on the hard shoulder literally flipped upside down, with other cars stopped to help the driver.

Best thing to do with this idiot is to get him out of your life, IMO.

  • Deffo call ebay, speak to a sympathetic person. Explain what has happened and they will remove the comment. Make sure you throw in he has left you vindictive feedback as he wanted to pull out the transaction etc etc - get some sympathy by mentioning your otherwise top selling record. They can read the exchange of messages between you and 'prowanker ebayer' as they have access and can judge who was being a Cnut about things. 100% they will remove.

'B' is a fucking good idea too. Top man.

  • D) Moved on with life.

Have you ever not bought something from someone on eBay because you checked and they had 1 negative feedback?

  • Man ebay if boiling my blood right now! The list of changes seems to be never-ending, i read a couple posts in this thread about the managed payments... what a joke! I sold a bike last friday (tasty steel colnago) and the payment wasn't processed by ebay until the following Tuesday, i then had to wait for my bank to process the payment on top of that... So it can take up to 7 whole days total for my payments to clear! And i am just expected to post as usual.. HA!
How can say a skint new user join ebay to clear some unwanted stuff and be expected to post sold items without receiving a penny. This is going to destroy new sellers joining, and will kill off buyers also due to delays in receiving an item!

To top all this off the are now forcing VAT on anything under £125, why the F do i have to pay that if i am not VAT registered? (no requirement until 85k+ turnover) this is going to make accounting even more of a ball ache.

After speaking with the helpline i got through to a nice irish chap who left me jaw dropped, he claimed the UK government as of july will be charging VAT on all private sales... Surely this cant be right?

    rant over :D

  • I’m out as far as selling on eBay is concerned. I’ve not bothered since the new rules came in, whenever it was. Just seems like they’re making it harder and harder for the casual seller. Even as a buyer I use it less and less. Seems like for many searches, the majority of results are from Chinese bulk sellers.

  • Going for this option, either going to sell the watch on here if there is interest or hold on to it for a rainy day…

Might even wear it a bit…

  • After speaking with the helpline i got through to a nice irish chap who left me jaw dropped, he claimed the UK government as of july will be charging VAT on all private sales... Surely this cant be right?

I’ve done a quick bit of Googling and this seems like bullshit.

There are some things about vat on private sales but it all still hinges on the vat threshold of £85k.

Maybe Ebay are just starting to assume that the majority of sellers using the platform will be doing that level of sales?

  • “* Maybe Ebay are just starting to assume that the majority of sellers using the platform will be doing that level of sales?*”

Thinking about it, this actually makes a lot of sense. I read that if you use an ‘online marketplace’ then that service is responsible for doing the accounting. Ebay probably just figured it’s easier to apply vat to all the sales on their platform and then deal with however many sub £85k sellers realise they’ve been incorrectly charged than vice versa.

I guess private, non business sellers doing under £85k might tend to sell higher value items but in terms of numbers of sales, sub £85k sellers must be an infinitesimally small proportion of their business now. I just looked through a few of the sellers I bought stuff from recently (drill bits, nuts and washers, brake pads etc) and found several that have done many thousands of transactions in the last month.
