There's apps for that.

On paper maybe, but 11-12 I only use with a fair amount of inertia going, well over 20mph. On the other hand the 37-46 only happens at really steep, loose off-road stuff at walking speed and it's literally grind to spin fast.

Fair point, just trying to show it's not that big of a gap despite the large teeth difference. All I want from my granny gear is to be as spinny as possible as a bail out.

I just looked up 10-51
10-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-33-39-45-51I find that fine, so yeah I wouldn't notice it much. If I need more than 37 I'm happy to spin. I use my 51 a lot!

Helps a lot not stressing out to keep momentum in every get a MTB climb. I don't use it a lot but when things get rowdy it's amazing

I've got a question to ask you folk who know more about gravel bikes than I - Apologies if not the right sub-forum, will gladly be pointed to the right one to ask there!
A friend is after buying a complete new gravel bike £1500 top budget, new as they want a short term finance setup, what would you guys go for? The great 2020/1 bike shortage is probably going to make this more difficult right? And yeah, my advice would be to buy used and get more for his money too - but he wants the satisfaction of something completely new and his for his first proper bike, which I do also get to be fair.
Looking forward to some advice!

No it's not.:
37/46 = 0.804
10/11 = 0.909So 10-11 is approx 10% jump, 37-46 is approx 20%. The gap is twice as BIG.

Depends on your chainring and tyre size as well, but assuming a 40t up front and 700x40c tyres then 10-11t is 100.5" - 110.6" gear inches, so 10.1" difference, 37-46t is 24" - 29.9" so 5.9" difference, about 60% as big a jump.

Like anyone's got time to notice the gaps at that end of the cassette. It's either pedaling or walking.
-
• #19814
Nope, tyre size and chainring make no difference to the % change in ratio which is what your legs feel when it comes to gear jumps: the difference in rpm between one gear and the next.
5.9 GI increase is approx 20% of 29.9
10.1 GI increase is approx 10% of 110.6The ratio change when changing is twice as big between the 37-46
