  • Super aggressive around here at the moment, with fledglings

  • ^ News like this really makes me wonder if other cat food is safe... :-( Hope everyone's kitties are well.

  • Stevie was so sleepy and lethargic in the heat yesterday that I got quite worried for a short time. However she was full of beans again by the evening :-)

  • My company recently worked on an investigation into poisoned cat food, we ended up having to permanently book out one of the meeting rooms as it now contains 140kg of cat food.

  • Oh shit. You know he's gonna be out there again... Revenge will be building in his cat brain those Gulls don't know what they have started. Glad you got him back in.

@hats poor kitty. The indignation of getting shaved 🙀

  • The fact is that kibble and tins and pouches of wet food are not biologically appropriate for cats. Even the "good" ones that don't have recalls.

Sure, good wet food might be nutritionally adequate but cats didnt evolve to eat cooked meat. Cat food in shops is there for human convenience not the wellbeing of your pet.

I appreciate that BARF feeding cats introduces different safety risks and its messy, expensive and inconvenient but I also think its important to say it how it is. Our love for pet cats leads us to seek convenient solutions to feeding them which are not good for long term health.

Dry food is shit for their kidneys. Wet food is basically like a human living off microwave meals. Most dry and wet food contains grains and vegetables that sound nice to humans but are unsuitable for obligate carnivores. Most cats have dental problems in later life due to these diets. I'm not sure what the solution is but the more I researched foods for Fabric, the more I realised that we've been sold a whole lot of bollocks by the pet food industry.

  • Applaws recall FYI.

I mean, look at Applaws....its a higher than average quality food but some of their kibble is still about 18% potato! Their tins are 60% chicken and the rest is rice flour and vegetable gelatine. That is not a good diet for an obligate carnivore. Most studies say that feral domestic cats with a decent supply of mice and birds never eat more than 1% carbs.

  • BARF feeding cats

I didn't even know this was a thing.

Now I've gone and ordered a box of hugs raw stuff for ours to try.

  • I didn't even know this was a thing.

We tried and failed to get Fabric to eat the more convenient raw food diets. If we ever get another kitten, it will be raw from day 1 if we can afford it.

Owning a raw fed dog and has been a bit of an eye opener in terms of differences in health before and after we switched him. One would assume the difference would be even bigger in cats.

  • Interesting. Ours are greedy and not particularly fussy so there is hope

    What's Fabric eating now?

  • What's Fabric eating now?

    Rainbows

  • Rainbows

    did lol

  • Ah sorry - I forgot about that.

  • Honestly no problem.

  • We have two cats, who are in theory fed on kibble, but eat very little as we are lucky enough to live in an area with a constant flow of mice, birds and rabbits. I do feel a bit guilty when they just sit underneath the bird nest in the garage and wait for the young to fall out, they have even worked out how to climb into the rafters and bat the nest, it’s essentially a cat piñata at that point…

  • Tried that with my two but suspect it was too late.

  • Cat gonna cat.

We had a mouse issue in our (my) out houses, cat just played with the animals and the birds yet loved tinned whiskas.

He had been de balled and still tried to hump anything. Even a neighbours (several doors up) prize chawahwah.

  • Waily was self sufficient whilst we were away this weekend. He's currently solving a neighbour's mouse problem by catching them and bringing them into my garden to eat.

  • Does your neighbour have flying mice?

  • Ha, there was an also missing from that paragraph

  • Serious cat food recall

I'd been feeding Herman that in the evenings, by rolling it on the floor so he can could chase it down so he sleeps of a night, then when I had to take him to the vet 3 weeks ago it was uninary issues... Does make you wonder.

  • My poor little Méabh :( She cries all night as she's on her own, so I try to hang out with her during the day, and despite all the torture I keep putting her through, she just wants to sleep on my lap. She looks so pitiful with no fur, although she is as soft as velvet.
