I'm not really familiar with Android or other mobile/tablet OS.

The OS seems pretty irrelevant to me, they all have basically the same UI.

If the rest of the family uses Apple it might be easier to keep her on the same ecosystem: troubleshooting, app sharing, etc etc

Now I wish I hadn't deleted the bit of my post where I went on to say that sticking within one ecosystem was helpful if you needed to synch across multiple devices...
