From my internet sleuthing it seems the method can differ depending on model year... but for my 2001 Subaru Outback I bought this cable and downloaded this software using this driver. The kind folk on uklegacy.com helped a lot, so might be able to advise.
That Saab is all kinds of awesome.
The Outback has had an engine light for a while and really wanted to avoid paying the dealership prices to diagnose and fix. Turns out you can install their "specialist" software online that somebody has generously ripped and with a £15 cable read the codes yourself. It showed both O2 sensors were shagged so replaced these and it's feeling a lot better. Power and 4x4 mode are working again it's a lot smoother and generally has its mojo back. Should be a lot better on fuel economy now too, well for a 3.0l flat 6. Not the most complex job but first time plugging a laptop into the car so quite satisfying.
