  • I'm afraid that ship sailed when it was retweeted by an account with over 200k followers. LFGSS might loom large in our thinking, but it's a minnow in the wider view.

I'm well aware of that, I'm not trying to suggest you posting it would lead to it ending up in shitty places, more that you've shared something that will have already been shared in shitty places, so it's already lost any original value and now it's just propagating it's racist delta variant. Which is probably why nuanced jokes about race or power dynamics or whatever aren't best served by memes, I'm all for being able to use comedy for whatever but you do need to be aware of the room and context, a lot of stand up is a clever, self derogatory slight on stage but would be straight up abuse to a stranger in the street.

  • Whatever the intention, it is racist.

    Oof.

  • New page, new memes, less racism talk pls.

  • Happens all the fucking time, on multiple threads....

  • Calling people stupid who find racist "jokes" offensive, really?

    Nope.
I was calling people who took Alf Garnet at face value stupid.
Or people who donโ€™t understand that a joke exposing racism isnโ€™t necessarily racist.

    But while youโ€™re here ...

  • Trans-exclusionary โ‰  trans-phobic

  • How do you work that one out? Why would one seek to exclude trans people if they weren't transphobes? Any action that seeks to de-humanise or denigrate trans people, is transphobic.

Trans Exclusive Radical Feminists want to remove or down-play the rights of trans women because they are literally scared that they will have their own rights removed or diminished. That's transphobia.

  • Really, what the waterbending fuck is this.

  • You guys are fucking ruining this thread. All of you.

  • When discussion of magnets, or momentum or something, derailed a different thread, I went and created the Science Squabbling thread.

I'm sure you can find somewhere similar to take this conversation. Or create somewhere for it.

    Please do.

  • Racism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism or any other kind of discrimination should be called out where it is seen/found. Moving it somewhere else because it bores people only benefits people who are likely never to be affected by it.

Don't have a go at the people calling it out, do something about the behaviour that started it in the first place.

    Fair point. Thanks.

  • Trans Exclusive Radical Feminists want to remove or down-play the rights of trans women because they are literally scared that they will have their own rights removed or diminished. That's transphobia.

What should people do if they are scared that their rights will be removed or diminished?

  • Trans women, are women. Recognising that and respecting as such does not mean that the rights of women assigned female at birth are being removed or diminished. No one is being brought down to build anyone else up.

  • So your answer is that they should not be scared. Fair enough, that seems like a reasonable case to make and it would be great if there was a way forward that didn't make anyone fearful of their rights; however, people obviously are scared and you haven't answered what they should do if they're not persuaded. For the most part I get the impression that they don't want to bring anyone down, but are concerned about how they maintain their wellbeing in a situation that seems, to them, to be zero-sum.

I worry that we understate just how radical a shift is actually entailed by what you've said above. Saying "It's ok, we just want to fundamentally restructure a millenia-old social concept so that we now conceptually and legally divide society on the basis of gender identity, rather than sex. It will all be fine" seems just a bit underpowered as an argument for this scale of change, even if it clearly is driven by the urgent need to reduce the exclusion of a very marginalised group.

  • Ha! Yes, all the healthcare. I've yet to meet anyone who disagrees on that.

(apologies for drifting into wanky philosophical discussions, I know that these issues are very, very real for a lot of people, I just wish we could actually have the discussion to get some sort of society-wide understanding of how and why we make this shift)
