  • Love U-Roy. I have an '86 copy of Dread In A Babylon and one of the recent reissues. There's not much in it. That cover though! Got a Live At The Lyceum 12" with Runaway Girl & Chalice In The Palace on, the album versions are brilliant though.

Have you read Bass Culture by Lloyd Bradley. Lots of great stories about the artists and labels. I guess a lot of reggae artists are like U-Roy, never really able to capitalise of the brilliant output.

Made me think of Prince Far I - Under Heavy Manners. Classic dub cover art :)

  • My old bandmate, Dig, started out wanting to make a documentary about dub... He got the runaround quite a bit, chasing ghosts, etc... Then he managed to organise a meet with Bunny Lee through an intermediary, he was told he'd meet him at a barbers shop in Harlesden... No one showed up on the first day, he came back the second day and just waited around, eventually Bunny Lee sidled up and said hello...

They became great friends, put out loads of music together, Dig went out to Jamaica and spent time with the family, etc... He's recorded with Lee Perry, U-Roy, Bunny and loads of others... Amazing story... Pressure Sounds is his label, you might even own some of his catalogue!

  • I have got a couple of them, Prince Jammy - Strictly Dub and Phil Pratt & The Sunshot Band - Dial M For Murder.

It's always been my experience that there's some initial shyness with reggae artists but once you get past that it's a really friendly scene. I lived in Southampton for a while in the early '90s, had a great time in the shebeens.

  • Great story! Did he ever make the documentary?

  • I remember buying this!

The Blood and Fire pressing of Pick a Dub wasn't too bad from memory.
