  • New page fail

  • Incase anyone cares my ebay app on my phone works with push notifications again, so fuck knows but they must have put out a update and its fixed it.

  • I read this and was ready to suggest Notion.
I really like it but also so do loads of other people so there’s a great community around it. @chrisbmx116 is also a fan I think

  • Will give it a go. Tried to import a few notebooks from a Evernote and it worked fine, same structure and formatting.

Made a few new notes and it’s night and day compared to Evernote, so much better.

I thought Evernote would be one of those companies that would stay at the top as the product was so mature and their audience really loyal with heaps of buy-in. Think that’ll shift though, unless it shifted already. Been reading a fair few grumbles online so maybe the tide is turning

  • Yeah can confirm am big fan, have everything in Notion from work trello boards to pizza research, would recommend.

  • Ace, thanks. Importing all my Evernote content now. Can't say it's super smooth but it seems to work.

  • I'm looking for an external hard disk (not ssd and around 4TB) to use to back up images of 2 MacBooks, are there any that are more reliable than others or ones to avoid?

I was thinking this one would do the job: https://www.ebuyer.com/881199-lacie-4tb-mobile-drive-usb-c-usb-3-0-portable-external-hard-drive-sthg4000400

(I was thinking I could partition it and keep bootable images on it).

  • Google backblaze Hard drive test or something like that, think they publish their stats.

Or get two and run carbon copy cloner to mirror them

  • I avoid seagate anything and buy western digital usually and as kboy has said below carbon copy cloner.

  • Is anyone looking for a Mac Mini at the moment? My parents have just swapped over to an iMac and as such have got the old box kicking about so asked if I knew anyone that was after one before they took it to CEX etc.

    It’s this late-2014 one (A1347) - 1.4GHz dual-core i5 (2.7GHz turbo boost), 4GB 1600MHz LPDDDR3 onboard memory, 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive and Intel HD Graphics 5000.

It’s in Peterborough at the moment although it could be posted (or potentially brought to the Dartford area if timings work). Any sensible offers considered!

  • Why is my 2020 MacBook Pro in permanent fan on meltdown mode with a few windows/tabs open in Safari and Chrome? The Guardian seems to be a pretty big offender, but my iPad Pro doesn't suffer from any of these issues and I've tonnes more stuff open on that.

  • Heavy sites, ie Guardian, in Chrome will eat memory and resources.

Open Activity Monitor to find the culprit

    https://support.apple.com/guide/activity-monitor/welcome/mac

Your iPad only runs safari which is more efficient compared to chrome

  • I've been using Activity Monitor to see what's causing the most damage and it's a variety of sites in Safari (Guardian, looking at you) and a few others such as Gumtree etc. It's mostly stuff that I've browsed and forgot to close. But, I would have thought my MacBook Pro could handle more stuff being open, it's maxed out.

  • Will £100 get you an iPad that’ll do web browsing, email, video calling etc. All the basic stuff, without being shit and slow? Trying to get an iPad for my mother in law, who’s wheelchair bound with MS but happily manages texting on an old phone and laptop use.

Smartphone is a bit too fiddly/droppable (and I’m sure an iPad would be equally droppable, hence trying to give it a go for cheap).

I have a gen 1 iPad but it’s basically unusable with how slow and crashy it is - which I can’t imagine would be great for someone with impaired motor control.

Can you get WhatsApp on iPads now?

  • Not sure on the best ipad, but in terms of whatapp, there is no native app, but there are third party ones, which are basically skins for the web version, but work fine.

  • Ah sound. I’ll be doing all the setting up so it should be fine to get something organised, even if it’s a bit of a fiddle.

  • Sounds like an iPad mini with a solid rubber case would be a good option. Bit cheaper but still good performance

I have a 2nd gen mini you can have for cheap. Pm me if interested

  • New Big Sur - I cant find how to display battery % (can click on it but it used to show within the img)

  • Blue 44m Apple Watch 6 for £299 (instead of £409) if you're quick....

  • Cross post from the working from home thread:

I'll need to tweak my work setup at home as new gig will mean pc laptop. Ugh but I’ll try and make the best out of the situation.

I have an LG 5k screen now. Anyone using a tb3 kvm switch they can recommend? Would be good to hook up both computers to the same screen / keyboard / wacom / mouse

  • Not iPad but if you're looking at low budget then the Amazon Fire ones are probably the best value.

  • Honest question - are android tablets a good idea for older, less computery people?
