There are several 1" ahead stems available, admittedly not as many as 1 1/8", so "need" of a custom stem is not necessary, but if you're dropping 4k on a custom built frame absolutely nowt wrong with getting a nice custom made stem to top it off.

What are the nice 1" ahead stems? I found one kalloy knock off ages ago, otherwise I found it a massive ballache tracking one down.
Also nice build JB! Looks banging. Sadly I got more emotionally invested in your Seven than you it seems. But guess what? I just bought a 2015 Genesis Equilibrium so SUCK IT

I'm sure that not a lot of person can feel the difference from 1" to 1 1/8 and almost no one have Kirk as a race bike. My thought is that if you want a custom bike of that level you "need" a custom 1" stem and not just a shim
