I was watching it on live TV but I'll have a look on the site.

Don't worry, was only interested if it was on web. I'm not doing anything with TV media at the moment. Thanks anyway.

yeah but it does show yet again that there's a queue a mile long made up of people happy to write cheques for cis white men who say shitty things about minorities, regardless of the circumstances.
interesting to note how a lot of the reportage around this has been about how young white men who find themselves in spotlight need better training on how to use social media...

Yup. The undercurrent of think what you like; but don't say it out loud, in case you get caught is deeply sinister.

better training on how to use social media...
Indeed, I found this a bit baffling, surely the effort should go into coaching young white men not to be racist/sexist twerps.
Having said that, I suspect this may be quite a massive task... My kids attended a majority white suburban secondary and witnessed a culture of white teenage boys identifing as an increasingly marginalised and oppressed minority needing to fight the liberal tide of race and gender values that threatens their birthright as proud english men...Early on I found this shocking especially when the level of privilege is so great they should be wringing their hands with embarassment rather than whinging about a percieved loss of their god given right to be a sexist/racist twat.
Now it just seems like a depressing normality, especially when public servants like Dowden & Johnson encourage this bizarre behaviour... -

At what point is a child responsible for educating themselves instead of absorbing the opinions of their parents/friends parents/ older brothers/media etc? It sounds like you expect secondary school age children to completely re-evaluate the world they're told is true up to this point.
It's disappointing that it happens, yes, but it doesn't surprise me. I totally agree more coaching is required, but I fear this is laying seeds for change of thinking in such children, not something that can uturn their views. #NotAChildPsychologist -

better training on how to use social media
this doesn't sound that far away from
anyone is his position would surely have the presence of mind to go back and review what he said and maybe delete the fuck out of anything that might bite you on the arse now that you're in the national spotlight, because if you don't it kinda looks like you still hold those opinions.
It feels kinda weird to me to expect someone to go "well, yeah I used to be a right fucking twat, I'd better go back and tidy up my public image" - I see the point about if it's still out there then people might assume that's what you still think and/or it's still out there to cause offence, but it's image management - like coaching someone now to have a clean image. Maybe it's a better result for it to bite him on the arse now, after all, it's what was said at the time, and to have to make this public apology. I also get people wanting to avoid that embarrassment and hiding their histories, but I don't get expecting that they should.

It's a good point, and I'm not suggesting for a second that it's on the schools or the kids themselves to deal with this, more just a sad reflection of how far we still have to go.
Contrasting it with my experience at a state comp in the 80s -90s back when the progressive liberal agenda was widely accepted, political correctness was still considered to be a vehicle for social justice and all the teachers were card carrying lefties
You got expelled for saying something racist and ostracised by your peers for holding right wing views.Assuming that generation of kids are now accepting, enabling or propagating the shite views my kids face I'm wondering whether those attitudes were there all along but not voiced for reasons of self preservation, image management or good manners...
which brings us neatly back to:
think what you like; but don't say it out loud, in case you get caught

Indeed, although mine (state comp, late 80s / early 90s) was different again, as it was as far from cosmopolitan as you could imagine which, ironically, meant there wasn't really much racism as there wasn't really anyone to be racist to/about. Close to 1100 pupils (during the 5 years I was there) and there was only one that wouldn't be described as "White British" and she was from those distant furrin lands called Spain. (Ah, one more, this doubled to 2 in 1990 when a Kuwaiti lad joined our year.)

My experience of 90's comp could not be more different, you would get an absolute shoeing for being anything other than a white, footie lovin, hooch swiggin, flag lovin mad lad and your life made a misery for being different although like Greenbank my rural small town comp of 1,100 only had only half a dozen non-white students who were almost all kids of families that ran the local takeaways. Racial, sexist or homophobic slurs were the norm on the daily. I could not wait to leave that place.

I remember kids at my junior school singing what I assume were National Front songs, won't repeat it but I particularly remember one to the tune of what shall we do with the drunken sailor. I guess they would have got them from older brothers or the older kids rather than parents. I think it was more than thinking it was funny or edgy.
I'd hope that doesn't happen any more.

Did you go to school with Nigel Farage ?

Thanks to the power of Google I've just discovered that these songs were not in fact rallying cries from an extreme right wing racist organisation. They were football chants. Which explains where small children got them from.
So I'm just going to call BS on this rosy PC memory of school in the 1980s people here seem to have.

My bigotry when I was young certainly did not come from my family. It came from private school and my failure, for whatever reason, to use my brain to challenge that shit.
