I'll be honest - I hadn't quite got tonthat bit when I posted, as i had a few windows open with youtube on.
It feels like a questionable choice! Yours seems sensible though.
Do you have any upstand?

Made a new record cabinet over the last two weekends.
Plenty of room for expansion. Should let another 6 months 😅

Has anyone on here made there own shutters? Our bedroom window is too big for conventional black out blinds so I’m considering making shutters.

I have 12mm in the utility room, defo too thin.

No, no upstand as such. The ‘flaps’ from the cut out slip under the flashing of the window, then there’s a while flashing kit to stick on top.
If you haven’t seen it, the restoration couple on yt has a pretty good video on how to flash an upstand. You glue down the triangular flaps to the vertical face then use flexible self amalgamating tape over the corners. Looks pretty straightforward, if a little fiddly.

What’s it laid over?
-
• #30208
Oh, nothing. Lots of joists though.

Ah yeah, can imagine 12mm would be pretty flexy. I’m laying mine over essentially a solid base.
-
• #30210
Yeah wildly different.
It’s not that bad, the joists are super reinforced with lots of noggins. -

Nice! Looks really crisp.

Thanks for the tip.
I'm trying to figure out if I should buy the off the shelf upstand, or just make one in timber.

Any strong opinions on pre-painted skirting? Seems like money well spent at the moment as I'm short on time and also REALLY hate painting skirting.
Fairly confident I can make a not totally balls job of cutting it up.

Definitely go for dipped / pre painted

Any hot tips on retailers? Looks like I'll be ordering online anyway

Always liked Champion Timber

I'm not a Londoner so looks like it might be an online thing, one more place to check out locally tomorrow first.

Anyone know somewhere that will keep stock of nice quality birch ply (all layers birch)? Preferably north/east London?
Had a job come in at the weekend with a short turnaround time so could do with picking up 4 sheets tomorrow morning.

DW Timber or Jennor Timber.

+1 for Jennor Timber,
although I only use the South Ruislip branch. -

Curious to hear ideas for this windowsill.
It's on our outhouse in an area we're tidying up. The previous owners obviously scored a double glazed unit and installed with the wooden sill. I've discovered the brick sill below is the original and would have matched with the house.
I started to paint the sill and frame white (as I was using it elsewhere), and it's occurred to me that part of what makes it look so shit is that the green paint makes it look like spare paint was being used. Going to do the surround in black.
Uninstall/reinstalling is not an option. My two thoughts are:
- Work out a way of cutting the wooden sill flush and blending it into the frame so you only see the brick sill. I have a circular saw, but doubt it'll get flush enough.
- Build a bigger "fake sill" to merge the two together.
Any bright ideas?

Needs another windowsill.
Maybe two, just to be safe.

I would remove that with an oscillating saw (fein etc.) or a normal saw even and then plane it flat. The closer you get to flat the less planing but if your plane is sharp and you know what you're doing it would be pretty easy.
My only concern would be what happens under the existing cill, how well it is sealed to the original and can you create a neat waterproof join there.
