Mark Brummell, 53, a cycle campaigner was knocked off his bike and died on Monday of this week. He is the 35th cyclist to die on British roads this year.

My sincere condolences for his friends and family.

  • Terrible news, thoughts and best wishes to all who are affected.

  • Many thanks for posting this news. RIP to a very brilliant man. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

  • really a tragedy. thanks for posting this.

  • Nice guy aswell, helped me out with my bikes over the years and sold me countless amounts of parts.

  • When not in London I live less than a mile from where Mark was hit by a car. It is a wide open cross road junction. We think Mark was on the priority road and the car was going west, towards the camera in this photo it is hard to understand and very sad.

  • I've just returned from a break riding in the New Forest where we came across an ominous white mountain bike locked to a give way sign. We stopped to pay our respects and my thoughts immediately fell back to this thread as I realised who it was.

Seeing a ghost bike in the confines of Zone 6 is always depressing but somehow a bike locked to a sign or post in the middle of the country side will always leave a lasting impression in my mind. It was almost a year to the day since passing a similar scene near Wareham where Rob Jefferies died.

The only positive that I can find is that it's a prettier final resting place than most.
Mark, I hope you enjoy riding those roads as much as we have over the last few days.

  • A sobering sentiment, mate.

    RIP Mark.

  • Here's a video and an article explaining the problem at the crash site that @disq posted in another thread:

Tom Scott has a new video on the infamous Ipley Cross, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYeeTvitvFU

The article in Singletrack is also very good: https://singletrackworld.com/2018/01/collision-course-why-this-type-of-road-junction-will-keep-killing-cyclists/
