It's a slightly funky size 27 x 1 1/4, would it be worth replacing with something like 700c or stick with it?
Looks like there's enough brake adjustment available to go from 27" to 700C, and that gives you many more options on rims and tyres. If the front is in the same position, I'd go for it.
Also is a drum brake really necessary
Depends where you ride. For unloaded use in the UK, you probably don't need a third brake.
and if I were to replace the wheel what stuff should i look for for tandem specific rear wheel?
The key dimension is OLN, there is no universal standard. See discussion above about adapting solo hubs and the difficulty of finding anything over 36h
Hello all, I am entirely new to this tandem game and I'd love some advice. I've just bought an old motobecane tandem for my parents' 25th anniversary and have begun fixing it up. The rear wheel is needing to be replaced. It's a slightly funky size 27 x 1 1/4, would it be worth replacing with something like 700c or stick with it? Also is a drum brake really necessary and if I were to replace the wheel what stuff should i look for for tandem specific rear wheel? Thanks!
