Are Finisterre or Howies suitable for higher tempo road riding under a slim jacket or are they more causal riding orientated? If the latter is new Rapha as good as the old stuff? My old Rapha base layer is now 9 years old and has a ridiculous amount of use.

I’ve have Finisterre and Howies. No doubt they’ve changed their lines but neither of mine are similar to the basic round-neck, short-sleeve Rapha merino baselayers (best baselayers eva). Neither are good under (for example) an ‘aero’ jersey or similar.
I have given up waiting for Rapha to restock and have just bought some of the 200gsm dhb baselayers. They seem pretty close to what I was after. Maybe less usable in the warmer temps, but still stretchy, close fitting, comfortable, warm.

Cheers, quite like the look of the PEDALed long sleeve but will probably stick with Rapha

Looking for a casual cut T-shirt for pissing about on the mountain bike. Might take a punt on one of these

FYI Bamboo is Rayon.
Could be comfy but won't fight odour like Merino. -

Didn't know that thanks

Cheers, just a different source material, both end up as plastic.

Anyone know of any alternatives to the old Rapha Deep Winter Base Layer (or have a small for sale?!) Want that 340gsm + hood for sleeping out and starting early. Thanks

Merino shoot out in progress.
After realising my rapha and icebreaker short sleeves are all about decade old and wrecked from daily use, I’ve ordered up tops from icebreaker, decathlon, armadillo and isobaa. Will see which make the cut!

Winners and loosers:
- Decathlon: cheapest, best fitting, will keep
- Armadillo: most expensive, lets say its a gravel-specific fit rather than a roadie fit. Mrs Cookiemonster said it looked it was stolen from the set of the big lebowski, so thats going back.
- Isobaa: sent the wrong item, and their returns process is all manual
- Decathlon: cheapest, best fitting, will keep

What model from Decathlon and how much?
How does it compare to the Rapha? -
• #1388
Except blue...
Its £30. Difficult to compare with Rapha, as my Rapha merinos are years old and pretty much see-through around the shoulders. Feels a little heavier, and maybe not quite as tight fitting, but I'd still wear it as a base later (and its not "wooly" like Howies merino)

Looking for short sleeves, and much prefer raglan for sports kit (as I have no upper body to speak of...)

The dhb 150g is a good approximation of the Rapha SS merino baselayer.

But not raglan

American apparel called and wants you back.

I’ll be wearing my raglan rapha merino base layer and carrying every cycle top I’ve ever owned and they’re all raglan
Have you thought of taking up football?
-
• #1396
I hear you on this, Shackleton did a beautiful short sleeve raglan a few years ago, the finest merinos I’ve ever encountered.
-
• #1397
What is it about raglan that's important to you?
-
• #1398
I don’t know about CM but I have narrow shoulders and wide hips for a guy and things that fit up top don’t fit lower down.
I can size up with raglan sleeves and it doesn’t look as weird as it would with standard insets. -
• #1399
Yep this - getting a good fit over narrow shoulders. I assume it’s the reason that all cycle tops are raglan ever since the thick woolie molteni tops were the thing

I like raglan for the opposite reason - I have wide shoulders and it's easier to get something that fits. Also you don't end up with a seam sitting on top of the corner of your shoulder.
Hi all
Just wanted to thank you all for the valuable recommendations upthread!
