TBF I ridden on those system before and they were very precise, the cable tension is always spot on, so there's no slack when you changes gears when running friction.
Downside is that it's friction, I personally think he's best off just fitting a 7 speed cassette from a 10 speed block and run a dura ace 10 speed shifters.
