Yep exactly this. My take is the true Wankbrid is a bike generally built for knocking around on, that becomes too valuable due to extravagant parts choices, to leave unattended anywhere. A true test is would you leave it locked up somewhere all day (Edit: @maj maybe that should be one of the rules?)? The controversial tyre rule enforces that the bike is never going to be used as intended.
Mine upthread snuck in due to use of new Brooks Saddle, Middleburn cranks, hope wheels, Thomson, Salsa and Hope finishing kit, XT gears. All pointless if the bike is what it is supposed to be.
This then leads to needing another bike, one that is cheap and functional can genuinely be locked up and left without worry. I have started the build based on an old Surly frame. Wheels will be Phil Wood. Cranks Sugino. Cambium Saddle, Brakes Ultegra.... with each new bike I feel I have stepped inwards to the next concentric circle.
