Zipaquira and the area around it in Colombia where he's from and regularly trains is not usually as horrid as conditions are today but it does get pretty nippy and wet.

This is what I thought. He's from 4000m altitude right? That high the weather is always unpredictable and very grim at times. Then here's Carthy thinking he can get one up in the rain because he's from Preston...

Not quite, 2,700m but that's high enough! And you're right, at that altitude and with mountains all around it does change on a dime.
