@ExTra Suspect, if what I have been told is true, she won't be coming home for a long time. Trying to get confirmation where she is and not just gossip. But is hard as I'm not next of kin or anyone.

Well let's say you have "borrowed it".
Furthermore one does not own cats but cats are owning you.Jokes aside, I do understand your concerns but the reality is that without you or somebody else taking care of it that cat would be outside and alone, full of fleas, worms, and hungry.
So in my eyes you definitely did do the right thing, absolutely!
The person that went to hospital will most likely be really grateful that somebody took care of it, which she apparently failed to do.
