  • The Standard I played as a young man played a big part in destroying my spine, marathon 6-8hr rehearsals didn't help...

  • Oooh. This just popped up on the bay in St Albans which is where my best mate lives (and where we'll be rocking out next weekend). Ticks a lot of boxes for me.... Any thoughts on the 2001 necks? Ad says it's "slim" which makes me a tad nervous.

  • Finally got my Epiphone SG (Special VE Cherry, few years old model, apparently a bit better than the newer ones) set up to C standard, with beefy strings. Sounds brutal, plays nice. There's this local luthier where I live, he does setups, repairs, builds and mods. He's a really nice old chap and he did a fine job for a good price.
So I enquired him about some P-bass stuff... He's gonna get me an Aria STB P-bass (I tried one at his place, played amazing - bear with me here, I'm a noob and I don't know what a high end guitar feels like), with a black body, "custom" black pickguard, set up to C standard. Otherwise factory specs. Really keen on getting my hands on it and finally play some fuzzed-out, face-melting, mind-bending doom riffs on a proper bass.

  • The Horn? My mates playing there next Wednesday

  • I had a 2002 Les Paul Standard. I played 10 or so before I bought my one. I can't remember the names of the different profiles that were on offer then, but every neck was different and I don't remember them really corresponding to the names that Gibson had given to the different profiles. If possible I'd say try it, because 'slim' might not mean that much!

  • @Yukirin Ha! Love that place. I used to play there as a teenager in my first band.

Nah, my mate in St Albans and has just finished kitting out his new garden office as a studio. Gonna head up there with a couple of mates, all of my gear and spend all day and night rocking, recording, smoking and relaxing.

  • They seem to have mainly tribute bands and weird sort of 90s nostalgia acts there now.

CSB alert: My mate's first job out of college was at MTV in the late 90s and one of his first assignments was to interview and film And You Shall Know Us By The Train of the Dead. They acted like prima donna rockstar dickheads and deliberately knocked over and broke a load of lighting in their interview then at the gig (I think it was at the Astoria) my mate was filming the gig and one of the band came over and kicked the camera (and by extension my mate's face) breaking the camera and cutting my mate's face.

20 some years late my mate is living St Albans and notices that AYSKUBTTOTD are playing in this shitty provincial pub venue. We got quite a long way through a plan to turn up and chuck a camera at them. Can't remember why it didn't happen. COVID i think. Am seriously up for it if they ever come back.

  • Great music though! Their first three albums are ace.
They do sound like dicks, mind.

Weird circuit going on around here for the tribute bands and 90's indie disco nights but they keep getting booked so someone must be going.
I gap filled bass for a Fu Manchu / Kyuss esque band back in the day

Rocked up with my two Orange 4x10 and the sound guy did the sound guy "you won't need both of those" speach.... Needless to say I fully enjoyed using both of those in that little room and the PA handled it all fine. One of my fav gigs I played!

  • Looks like heaven to me! One day I'll have a double bass...

  • Nice!

Loving the Soundcloud link too. Is that you on vocals? Dig it!

  • That DB is a piece of shite. He bought it for £50 in about 1993 I think. It was an ex school one and had a hole kicked in it. The sound posts were loose, the bridge was broken and it has huge splits in the side. It was the most gutless and underwhelming instrument ever. He's spent years variously ignoring it, playing it, fettling it generally trying to polish the the turd. It's currently stripped for a refinish having had all the cracks repaired. It still sounds rubbish. But hey! it's still a double bass right?

It's on most of my old band's recordings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF3aI0VI5lY

  • But hey! it's still a double bass right?

Exactly my point haha! And that is one catchy song...

  • Well out of budget tho.

  • Nah, I just filled in on bass for a few months. Singer was a very charismatic guy but quite a diva, loads of stage presence and was a really fun band to play for.

  • And You Shall Know Us By The Train of the Dead

    er Trail Allan 😉

  • Maybe they were actually a tribute act.

  • Well fuck me I went and done it. Just ponied up for this:

Should be here next week. Never bought a guitar unseen or unplayed before. I reckon it'll be fine though. If I don't get on with it I can always flog it right?

It's the same year as my Tele which I think is a good omen. 20 years old this year. Gonna need some more guitar hangers! Woooot!
