If anyone has any recommendations between the Beyerdynamic DT990 vs DT880 headphones, I'm all ears (lol). I'm leaning toward the DT880s as they seem flatter and I'd be using them for mixing.

I have the 600 ohm version of these and they're great, there's nothing close at that price point imo.
Edit- just to add that they're really comfortable as well. I can wear them all day with out issue, first pair I've had that don't leave my glasses imprinted in my head.

Yeah I think DT880s are hard to beat at that price.
If you start edging towards the £350 range you should take a serious look at the Audeze LCD-1 - the tech (and the frequency response curve) is amazing.

Thank you, and @Gewürzt - I'll pick up a pair in that case. I don't know if I've got the juice to run the 600 ohm version but I know the 250 ohm version plays OK with my Apollo Twin X.
I'm currently using a pair of HD25s. I cannot wait to have a proper pair of mixing headphones, no idea why it's taken me so long.

That sounds great to me. Lovely sense of clean space in the percussion.
I think my prob with HD25s is that they're DJ headphones - brilliant at keeping external noise out but they're not comfortable for long sessions, make your ears sweaty, and are a little undetailed. Don't get me wrong, I know people who've made entire records using nothing but them and they sound great, but I want to hear proper detail.

Yeah HD25s are indestructible but I can't mix (as in production, not DJing) on them at all. I find them really boxy sounding. Sony MDR7506 (with the Beyerdynamic EDT250V pads fitted) are way better for that for the money but don't have the best bass response.
I made the mistake of trying some Audeze planar 'phones and now I can't go back. I justify it by not spending money on monitors and room treatment, because I'm producing at home in my flat.

Both are great options and both will need adjusting to, so in a mixing sense it doesn’t matter loads - I have the 990s because they were only £75 in an Amazon deal!

Sorry another boring monitor question. In addition to picking up some proper mixing headphones I also want to upgrade my monitor situation
I need clarity and not an enormous amount of sub bass (I make sparse, ambient, piano led music) from small monitors. However I've been burned by small monitors in the past. Are Genelec 8020s big enough to use as main monitors or am I on a hiding to nothing trying it?

8020D are great monitors. I’ve been considering replacing my HS7s with them as I think they’d work better in my room. Unless you’re working in a large room and/or at high volume 8020s are probably going to be just fine.
The Neumann KH120 are also highly rated, bit more expensive, no experience of them personally but would like to try some time.

The old PMC DB1 are pretty good. I run a pair of the TwoTwo5 with a Sub1 now but I had the PMC DB1sa before that and before that the Genelec 8020 which I liked but found I was mixing the high end too hot.
The SE Munro Eggs have been on my list to hear for a long time.

Yeah, it’s kind of specific to my situation though - if I could have a sub paired with small-ish nearfield monitors I probably would, but making music (often with an 808 kick 😂) at home in a flat isn’t really conducive to using a subwoofer.
I use the HS7s happily while jamming, moving around the room a bit etc - for basic mixing they’re pretty good. But when getting into EQing stuff and the overall tonal balance of the mix, I go to a good pair of headphones - Audeze LCD-X - and do a lot of looking at EQ meters / spectrum analysers and what-have-you to figure out exactly what the low end is doing.
The Audezes are the key. It was Fanu that turned me onto them, he does all his mastering work using them. But if you’re not working with sub frequencies all that much in your mixes then I feel 8020s ought to cover you.

I got some discount when the first released them because I'd had to pay for new amps for the DB1sa. The flying mole amps they had in the originals were brilliant but mad, they never provided the circuit diagrams to PMC and as a consequence couldn't be repaired.
Apparently the Result 6 is a decent monitor.
I am very happy with the combination I have now though.

I've had 8030As for 15 years, I only just recently upgraded to bigger Genelecs (timber framed house seems to soak up bass quite nicely). My use has been more general hifi and movies than nearfield monitoring, but I expect 8020s to be good tools if the low freq extension is enough for you. Even the 8030s are small speakers.

I've got the 8020C. Love them. I've got a fairly small room and get on with them fine. For bass reference I've got a SubPac but mostly I think I just know the Genelecs and use Spectrum and other metering a lot.

Can anyone sort me out with a delay or reverb unit/pedal, I picked up a late notice gig next weekend.
Also looking for midi controller with lots of knobs.
