Road tyre choice

  • Ok, so I'm currently deciding on tyres for the new bike arriving in a few weeks.

Rims will be Bontrager Aeolus pro 37s (21mm internal), which I already have.

I've had largely good experience with tubeless on road, though one the 1 occasion I did have a tubeless flat I couldn't sort it by the roadside (despite a tyre worm) and had to call the Mrs (who was unimpressed). I've had 3 flats on tubed in the same kind of mileage but all were easy roadside fixes. I suppose my issues with tubeless are they can be a right faff and I'm not confident about the failure possibilities a fair distance from home.

I've been riding 25s but am inclined towards 28s for comfort and grip. I like to ride fast (by MAMIL standards) but I'm no racer.

    So the decisions are these:

    1. Tubeless or tubed?
    2. 25 or 28mm?
    3. What tyre?

I'd like something fairly light and with at least reasonable puncture protection but grip and ride feel are probably the priorities. Oh, and tan walls are a bonus.

I've got a shortlist but suggestions are very welcome!

  • Try the which tyre thread maybe?

  • Thanks, will post in there.
