Grub screws on end cap - what for?

Posted on
  • Hi - Just trying to service a hub from a 2012 Genesis Day1 Cross. I've got the end caps off and need to drill out one of the grub screws, but I'm wondering if anyone knows why the grub screws are there? When rebuilding are these tightened after the wheel is fitted so under lateral pressure or should they be tightened first (which I suppose would hold off some of the lateral force on the bearing)?

Can anyone educate me on this?

  • Tightening the wheel nuts should not be applying any load to the bearings.

  • Sorry if I wasn't clear - This is a sealed bearing hub not a cup and cone. Hopefully the picture clarifies.

  • No I know. Wheel nuts still shouldn’t be applying load to the bearings.

The grub screws are just there to hold the caps on, there should be no need to do anything other than slider them up against the bearings before tightening in place.
