Brompton owners

What’s the most puncture proof tyre for a Brompton? Spent the morning removing and refitting the rear wheel from my partner’s six-speed Brompton to fix a puncture and I’m not anxious to do that very often (both wheel nuts, the nut that holds the chain tensioner and the gear cable nut were all seized).

Current tyre is a Marathon and it’s pretty cut up, but it never seemed very puncture proof even when new. I have Marathon Pluses on my Brompton, but I understand that these are not recommended, even though I’ve not had a puncture since I fitted them.

There's absolutely no reason not to get Marathon Pluses that matters, aside from the weight / rolling resistance.

(they're slightly bigger than some arbitrary Brompton size limit, which is why Brompton don't fit them)

Always good to make sure this stuff is in usable order. Even Pluses are fallible.

They looked ok, no rust or anything, but there seemed to be grit in the threads. I cleaned them up when I eventually got them off and regreased. Bike is a daily commuter so gets ridden in all weathers, although it was serviced a couple of months ago.

Maybe the better question is when do you know to replace the sleeve.

As grams said, there can be an issue with sizing.

Even with marathons you still need to remove the bits caught in the tyre, but the pluses have a twice as thick puncture protection over the marathons.

This hasn’t had much use recently what with the whole “work from home” thing but forgot how fun they are to ride. Even more so when not commuting through town.

if you have 4 threads out of the nylock and its slipping; if the back half is visibly thinner etc

Alfine hub gear, disk brakes, Dynamo lighting. Also titanium spring, clamps and upgraded roller wheels which are quite nice but entirely form over function!

Yes, I have them on my Brompton, but I think that their puncture resistance outweighs the disadvantages. I absolutely never want to get a puncture on a Brompton, especially the rear. My partner won’t notice the difference between the Marathons she has on her Brompton at the moment and the Pluses (except for less punctures).

It's not the thickness of the tyre, it's how rigid the casing is which makes it not sit and sometimes pop off.

Marathon is still my go to.

Do you mean when riding or when fitting the tyre?

Probably not--I was thinking about inquiring with kinetics to turn it into an 18'er so I can put knobblies on it.

2 to 6 is a straightforward upgrade. New rear wheel, extra gear lever, a few other minor gubbinses.

You'll need a new rear wheel - deraillleur, shifters, spring thingy and cables.

The derailleur and left shifter and springy thing are the same on the 2 and the 6.
