Our strategy is to clean thoroughly, clean again and then oil generally goes wonders already. Is it solid wood or veneer "woodchip board"?
Regluing joints if necessary also works well to give it a new lease of life. If it is a dowel construction I tapped the boards loose with a rubber mallet, reglued and repressed with big ass screw clamps.
But yeah, put a photo up, then the hivemind can give some advice
