  • As far as I can tell, each country gets to choose the standards they require.

I'm only familiar with Austria and Switzerland. Both countries say that the test cannot be self conducted.

Edit: Worth noting that EU citizens don't require tests or vaccines to travel to other EU nations if their home country is rated green or orange on the new system. As it stands, UK citizens are excluded from that. Currently Austria and Switzerland forbid travel from the UK on the basis that it is a third nation.

  • Not self administered here either. You need a test certificate and the labs only issue them foe tests they carried out

  • Do the travel tests require you to do it in person and have your ID verified and have the swab done properly, or am I being hopelessly naive?

Yes, Mrs Sifta is flying to take care of her parents on Friday, had to upload passport photocopy to Boots website, and take it with her to the test. The 48 hour turnaround, and requirement of having the test within 72 hours of landing (Not departing), makes it a very small window of testing. If she was Antipodean, I don't think its even possible.

  • Are the 15-minute tests not applicable in the UK? I can turn up to the airport and get a test here (I mean, I won't, but it's a good backup).

  • It had to be a officially administered PCR test, not the 15 min lateral flow test. And you get a certificate.

Also this isn't for the UK (That joy is yet to come for the return journey!). These requirements are set by the airline, the destination country, and, in this case, the intermediate country since she is flying Qatar via Qatar.

  • Ah okay. The fast tests are done at the airport here by trained staff so assumed the same may be possible elsewhere.

  • Some countries are allowing lateral flow tests for entry. In most cases the lateral flow test has to be same day I think. Most are PCR only though.

    EU nations will be accepting:

antibody test or a letter from a doctor saying you've recently had Covid
full (two dose ) vaccination proof
    PCR test

Although Austria is currently saying lateral flow is ok also.

173 dogs, 161 cats, 31 hamsters, 10 rabbits, 4 chinchillas, 1 hedgehog and 1 guinea pig sent to quarantine since the start of the pandemic.

  • Not a single bat?

  • They only quarantine the pets, the larder stays intact.

  • No Rams???

Surely the world would be a better place if all Rams were cordoned off?

  • Currently the rams are being corralled at the foot of the championship, its now down to a fight with the owls.

  • I'd be more worried about the swans and geese

  • Do you know what does that mean for pets from UK to EU and back?

Are racehorses still moving as 'normal' now horse racing is on?

  • To check my understanding- we can go to France, with a fresh, negative PCR test, and as France is likely (?) to be Amber it will be 10 days at home upon return?

Do we think it’s likely that France will go to Red or Green by the end of June/early July?

  • Why didn’t you guys tell me covid was done? Went to Brixton and Herne hill for a drink and I must have looked like a loon to all the mask less people out, everywhere, in swarms, what with my mask on.

  • I think this is correct. Ten days with possibility of leaving quarantine after 5 if you pass a test.

Its worth keeping half an eye on the EU traffic lights because they take rate changes and trajectory into account. I assume the UK is doing the same but at least the EU are transparent about how they do it.

Just did some more reading into this @Dammit. Its more complicated than I thought.

If you go to France you need to do the following:

-Take a Covid test in France before you travel back to England. Quarantine in France if you fail.
-Book a private Covid test for day 2 and day 8 of your UK quarantine before you leave France.
-In addition, if you want to "test to release", you must book a third covid test for day 5 while you are still in France.

So thats four covid tests at ~£200 a pop per person that you need to book. £800. Its not clear if you can cancel the day 8 one if you pass your day 5 "test to release" one.

In other words, its a little bit onerous and expensive.

  • My other half wants us to persist with a holiday booking in France in July still, whilst I'm pushing back as I think foreign holidays are a missable luxury during a pandemic. This just adds fuel to my fire.

  • It’s a bit cheaper than that but not much. Here’s an example from one firm, there are many more but this sets it out well for @Dammit
    £164 for day 2 and 8 tests.
£98 for test to release after day 5 but you still need to do day 8 test.
Plus whatever it costs in France to get tested before your return. So ballpark £500 a pop coming back plus any tests you need to get into France.

  • Interesting, thanks. Hadn't crossed my mind that there would be test package deals!

There's only one thing that doesn't sit right with me about these new travel rules. Its nothing to do with the fact that the requirements for Amber countries are so onerous. I'm more amazed that the government are happy to waive quarantine and testing for the green countries! Surely all international travel should have a test to release quarantine attached? By not doing so, they sure are putting a lot of faith in people's honesty and the effectiveness of testing and genomic testing in other countries.

Its not like the UK was particularly quick to identify the new variant that came out of Spain last summer...

  • I get you, I’m focussed on the rules as I’m in HK looking to travel back at some point to piss off Norths by turning up at the pub. HK has had no local transmission for a few days and yet is still amber. There are worse places on green who would pose a slight risk to you.

I’d say someone coming from here as a fully vaccinated traveller is zero risk given the controls we have. We sequence every case that happens in the community to identify the source of transmission but thats one or two a week. All the close contacts get shipped off to a quarantine camp for food poisoning unless they managed to have a breakdown at the thought of quarantine and get themselves sectioned (lucky bastards). #notkidding

Not sure if they also sequence the handful of cases that crop up daily in the 21 day hotel quarantine for new arrivals but they have the lab capability so i would assume so.

  • Had my AZ jab today. Quite a good process really, wander in, show invite, passport and social security card, get a zone to go and sit in. They call you up, doctor explains (in language of your choice) what the side effects may be and how to manage them then gives you to a nurse. She whacks the needle in and sends you for a 15 min sit in a sports hall. They then send you out of the door with a box of masks. Slight temperature so far, feels like a very mild cold.

Also went and had a covid test right after as I am traveling to France for a couple of days on Thursday. 59 euros, same day result.

Next week the govt here is starting to give people boxes of self-test kits so that anyone going into offices can be tested and can also use them to go to restaurants and bars.

  • Where are you again.
