Sla037/17 is a pretty hard sell for me when accuracy is so bad. Also feel like the proportions are off with a 40mm ish size and skinny bezel. Think they should have made it 37 like the OG. The spb 143 is pretty perfect for me, cheap enough not to worry about and I guess I got lucky with the movement with mine. Also staying away from magnets helps 😅

The charts that you can generate on Chrono24 for the watches that you own - I presume that they're based on the prices which similar watches are advertised for, rather than sell for, so how much should one knock off for an actual vs advertised valuation?

Thanks, really useful information, I’m gonna buy that kit given how much magnet we’re exposed to (my hearing aids including), my other Seiko (SKX007) weirdly behave the same.

To be clear, the accuracy isn’t bad, it’s not an inaccurate movement, they just don’t adjust them at the factory like they adjust GS. If you took it to a good watchmaker it could be adjusted to run very accurately indeed. My complaint is that, for the money they’re asking, they should be properly adjusted. It seems to be a brand hierarchy thing that they won’t do it below GS. (My 017 runs +1s / day FWIW.)
Re: size, the proportions are great for me, personally. Having tried one, the OG felt quite small for a divers watch, it felt dinky in a way that (eg) vintage Speedmasters don’t. If anything it’s the thickness that could be reduced (though a lot of it is in the crystal so it doesn’t look that big).

No one knows how they’re calculated. They’re probably based on a mix of sale price and asking price but they don’t make it clear.
It’s fair to assume that C24 asking prices are inflated but by how much, it’s difficult to say. Sold prices on eBay and forums will be lower but a lot of C24 sellers are dealers so their prices are inevitably going to be higher.

Thanks, interesting. My cheapest watch is now my most expensive, which I’m finding a little strange.

My Seiko 5 runs inconsistently, one week I notice it's a bit behind, the next a bit ahead. It's pretty annoying.
-

I don't wear any of my automatics often enough to notice any time inconsistencies.
Also, the Helson is the most I have paid for an auto, so not really expecting the same performance as a £2000 watch.

I mean, there’s a reason quartz took over.

I haven't reset my GS SBGA 229 since the end of February, and it is currently running 5 seconds ahead of time. Spring drive ftw.

Spring drive ftw
Aka mainspring-powered quartz. I’d really like an SBGA285…

I think I want the Longines Spirit, 40mm with black dial. I can get a new one for around £1400, so I hope to get one 2nd hand at around £1k. Missed one on eBay yesterday, I think it went for £1070. If anyone’s got one to move on - please let me know 🤝

All this talk of magnetism got me checking stuff and weirdly one of the lugs of the SLA was flagged up so popped it in the demagnetiser and stuck it on an Erica. I’m sure it’ll be COSC now, piece of piss this watchmaking lark.

No import duties letter yet. Is that how it works now? Letter follows delivery of package? My only experience with international orders is few deliveries from the US in the past couple of years; in those cases the letter came first and package wouldn't be released until duties were paid.
And yes, another G-Shock. I'll save it for G-Shock Thursday :)

You usually get the duty invoice before the package. I don't think they're actually checking anything at the border right now cos brexit

I've had stuff held at the post office pending a customs payment (items from Japan or USA)
DHL delivered my Helson, then wrote to me a week or so later asking for £12 VAT and £30 for the privilege.

Can be either. I've definitely had a few where the watch arrived and I thought I'd got away with it and then an invoice for taxes turned up a week later.
If you have a compass, wave your watch over the top of it and if the needle moves the watch is prob magnetised.
I have a demagnetiser - where are you based? (tho tbh they're cheap as chips on ebay and if your work means it might happen again you might want to pick one up)
