  • Just moved into a new house with a dedicated office room and I’m struggling with sorting some nice office furniture while trying my best to make it not look like an IKEA showroom, and could do with some guidance from those that might have more experience. I’ve been full time wfh since 2019 so can justify a nicer desk and chair that won’t make me want to gouge my eyes out. Maybe €1k (+/-10%).

I do love the eames desk but it’s totally way over budget for desk + chair. The Normann Copenhagen desk and Hay design CPH desks have caught my eye, but I’m wondering if they’ll look crap with a widescreen monitor on top and cables everywhere. I’m also trying to come to terms with the price being driven by the #design and not the raw materials, though at least it looks like the base and legs of the Hay desk are oak.

The other thing is that I guess it would be pointless not to pair them with similarly aesthetically pleasing chairs but are the likes of the normann Copenhagen hyg and hay chairs backbreaking for a days work?

Like I said I’m trying to avoid working in an IKEA showroom but maybe it really is the sensible way to go and save cash for nice furniture elsewhere? Vintage isn’t really an option as the choice in Ireland is pretty poor and shipping from UK isn’t an option.

  • I would put your money into the chair. Consider a used HM Aeron (or new if you can stretch to it).

I'd also recommend a sit / stand desk if you're full time wfh.

Personally, the desk is the one piece of furniture that should always be function over form considering how much time you spend at it.

  • Really recommend Knoll Life chairs which you can often pick up for really good prices second hand/refurbished. Though not sure whether as easy in Ireland.

  • A desk is largely a desk, even as a #buyer. Just kitted out my office with two bargain basement Ikea Bekants and they're fine. Spend your money on the chair, and go for comfort. That said, my pose chair is still in storage and I'm sitting on a HATTEFJÄLL right now and it is also 'fine'. I think I might even like it more than my old one but it's probably only because it doesn't have 10 years of home work wear on it.

This place does currently look like an Ikea show room and it pains me a little, but I spend most of the day staring at a screen (and my £350 desk lamp, so I don't forget who I am) and then I lock it up and walk away at the end so whatevs. A surprise Ikea win is the FJÄLKINGE; super sturdy, posey Blum runners for the drawers. Wanted HAY new order, couldn't face the price tag.

  • I'd have a look at used office furniture on ebay - you can usually fine decent usm haller, herman miller, vitra, muuto, HAY stuff as this is often specced as part of office fit outs.

I got a usm haller sideboard and Vitra pad chair for a fraction of rrp and barely used this way

  • Can't recommend WantDon'tWant highly enough. It's recycled high-end office furniture. In the past they've blown hot and cold with selling to non-businesses but they've always sorted me out, especially if you spend a few hundred with them.
