Vallient > Glowworm. Both shite although ive seen a few engineers online cream themselves about vaillants.

Not a combi but our boiler was installed by the previous owner in 1994. It's had one valve replacement in my ownership but is generally faultless.

Up in Glasgow id say budget for about 3/4k but hell knows for london.
-

It'll not be the most fuel efficient though compared to modern unit and you certainly won't get that length of time out of anything out today thats for sure.
-
• #45907
Another reason not to change it. What's the fuel efficiency going to save me? £5 a month probably, against an install cost in the thousands. House is being sold on anyway so I've got a new to me boiler to worry about soon.
-
• #45908
I mean probs more than that but its difficult to work that one out as much because gas prices are ridiculous now. They say the bigger the house though the more you'll save.
You're boiler i dont know what it is was maybe 60 percent efficient new but 25 ish years on might be 40 percent.

I have a Vaillant Turbomax from 1998. Apart from the diverter valve they say it can last pretty much forever. Efficiency wise there is not much in it, I saw some online calculator and it said it would
take 20-25 years to make up the cost of a new one in savings alone. -

Nah, don't think Axbridge is anywhere near as shit as Weston.
-
• #45911
There’s a cabinetry type on here leading the axbridge charge but I can’t remember who. @bashthebox maybe? We are now a little more local than we were to the area, will have to pop by on the bike and scope the place out soon.
e: correct tag! He runs the local cinema! Place is on the up! Buy buy buy.

Hmm, might have to make next weekends ride via Axbridge rather than Cheddar then.
I think the only time I visited was on a bike ride with the family down the Strawberry line, when we stopped at a pub (in the square?) For lunch. Seemed a nice enough little place, just a bit further afield from Bristol than we are really looking for I think.

Having a six bed house in Wales rewired now. Coming in circa £5.5K to £6K. Probably not far off what a London 4 bed would cost!

• #45915
How often should one replace a combi gas boiler?
If it's working, don't bother. If it isn't working and can't be economically repaired, replace it.
-
• #45916
Yup! Definitely do go through the route.
Was this direct with Halifax or through a broker?
-
• #45917
Any decent combi boiler these days (and last 10 years or so) will be above 90% efficiency, some are even in very high 90s%
-
• #45918
The poster is talking about his boiler that’s been in since ‘94. It’ll not be A rated like current models
-
• #45919
@konastab01 are there guidelines on ideal CH temps? New combo boiler in Nov-20 and although very quick to heat house (3-bed semi), bills have been quite high. Gas engineer set it at 75C, but I have no idea what the previous boiler was set to. Is 75C roughly the hottest recommended CH temp?

• #45920
The one we took out was > 20 years old
One of the guys that fixed our boiler was of the opinion that from a maintenance and longevity POV older boilers were better.
I wonder if part of that is that the shit ones and poorly made ones have already gone. But in any event his point was that you need a lot of energy savings to negate the cost of a new one.
-
• #45921
On that note, roughly how much does a boiler install cost?
From a quick look boilers seem less than I expected. I'd always assumed they were several thousands.
-
• #45922
Cheers all, I won't worry about it for a while then. Makes sense to leave it until after doing work on the house although it will need rehanging at some point if that wall gets internal insulation Could probably still do with a service check soon though.

Isn't @nefarious a sparky?

• #45925
Cheers. That's helpful.
Are you in/around London?
They say the life of a boiler is about 10 ish years thats what we tell customers. 10-12 years ish but honestly just your luck.
