  • Master cylinder still sticking but I’ve got the shite out of the pads by dousing them with water. I’m going to send the entire rear brake to Magura’s service centre with a fairly long note listing what a pain it’s been.

The front continues to be awesome- if I’d not had it as a constant reminder of how good these brakes can be they’d both be in the bin.

  • In fact, given that I have four Magura brakes and three always work and one always has problems I should really have sent the duffer in for Magura to exorcise it yonks ago

  • Results not yet confirmed, but so far I find the cornering grip of my Minion SS to be significantly better than the HD/NN pairing, with similar rolling performance, if not slightly better.

  • My DT Swiss 240S hub (current gen) turned itself into a bi-directional freewheel yesterday.

Pulled the cassette out to find that the toothed ratchet had stuck inside the microspline body, freed that and put the cassette back on and carried on with the ride, interesting failure though.

The grease in there is silver- anyone know if the special red grease that DT Swiss gives you goes silver from tiny particles wearing, or has the bike shop put the wrong stuff in?

  • Is the special red grease for pawls too? I thought it was just for their star ratchet setup.

But at any rate this sounds like a classic over-greased ratchet issue - either too much or the wrong type causes the pawls to glue down. Been there done that, cleaned it off and used less lube.

My vague as fuck memory thinks the red grease doesn't really stay red but I don't recall it being silver either. I did use a similar product that turned out to not be similar at all and was cream coloured.

  • If you look around online for this shit:
MOLYKOTE Grease Type / Size: TP42

Everyone says it's the DT Swiss special lube but it fucking isn't. It's nothing like DT Swiss lube. So I don't know where that bullshit started.

  • My DT Swiss 240S hub (current gen) turned itself into a bi-directional freewheel yesterday.

Current gen meaning the "240" (they dropped the "S") with the new ratchet design? If so this is a recurring issue with certain batches, DT are taking wheels back no-questions-asked for a retrofit:

A lot of people are seeing this issue:

  • I bought it new last year, it’s got the star ratchet where the design has changed to mean you can’t upgrade it tool free, but now need a special tool to do so.

  • The grease in there is silver- anyone know if the special red grease that DT Swiss gives you goes silver from tiny particles wearing, or has the bike shop put the wrong stuff in?

Mine was silver when I pulled it apart for a service after 2000k (road).

  • Cheers. I’ll have to pull my cassette off and see what the serial number is and check it against the list that Tychom linked too.

In other news, I think 760mm bars are probably too narrow for me, my natural hand position when using them results in the edge of my hand being off the end of the grip.

I tend to do that no matter what width the bars are, as it's more comfortable

  • I'm on 820mm bars now, feels good

  • I will definitely go back to 800’s on the 295, really interesting how different the 760’s felt when cornering. I guess I could get used to it but I’ve always been happy with 800, I just wanted to resolve the rotating grip issue.

  • I've always used ... Dunno if I should say this.... A bath of Finishline Wet in my DT free hubs, never had any problems. Got a little bottle of it that I use now and again, definitely don't put it on your chain though.

Also did the same in my Hunts, if you like loud, they're loud. The free hub seal is a fucker to get back on BTW.

  • I spoke to Magura today via their Facebook chat - you get someone with technical knowledge, which I was impressed by. Said to take my rear brake in to an authorised dealer to a) check for outstanding warranty recalls that applied and b) send it back to Magura to be examined. I’ll take them to the place that I’m getting my Raceline’s delivered to in Herne Hill.

  • Call from the shop - Raceline MT7's are here!

  • That's interesting.

What are the claimed benefits of the new system? Because this and Dammit's comment about them needing a special tool seems to be going backwards.

  • My impression is that the older system is/was better tbh. No special tools, "just works".

But maybe post-recall/warranty I'll feel more love for the new system.

My LBS doesn't want to buy the special tool to change the ratchet, which means that if I want to upgrade it I have to buy the tool myself, which in comparison to the special tool for the old one (aka "fingers") is annoying.

  • What are the claimed benefits of the new system?

    It's going to be weight

    It's nearly always weight

    Unless it's aeros

  • "Here's a lighter system that doesn't work. Enjoy!"

    I'm out.

  • So ungrateful. They even let you buy a new tool!

  • After paying £2000 for a tub of their special lube, they can sod off.
