Returnal is really nice, feels like a proper next gen game, great graphics, play style and the instant loading times are brilliant...
I really like the premise of the plot,
What puts me off is watching the gameplay trailers it looks like- run from room to room at high speed
- shoot aliens
- shoot bigger alien
Rinse and repeat,
Am I being unfair to the gameplay?

You have a buff mechanic called adrenalin that levels every 3 kills for max 5 stacks. each stack grants e.g. improved melee or dash.. If you get hit once then you reset the adrenalin buff to zero.
The green health/armour ground loot are ok, but to level your health bar you have to collect them whilst at max health and armour so collecting them as you come across them is a mistake, instead you're better to clear the level without getting damaged and then level up your health with it all before the boss fight.
Then you have weapons which drop with improved stats if your proficiency has levelled (which starts at lvl 0 each game)
The rest of items can be useless, including parasites you can attach which buff you in exchange for a debuff
Your dash command has dark souls-like invincibility frames baked in, so its a bit like playing destiny with a mix of dark souls and amnesia.

Mind you, it's really fucking hard. I just cleared something called a 'containment gate' for the first time which is a three phase spawn area of difficult mobs that you're locked into once you enter. I had the best guns I've ever had and after clearing it I 'saved' my progress (1 time save only) and attempted the first boss for the 10th time, he killed me twice, so now I'm back to the very start of the game.
Thing is, because the game randomises each time you die and you don't know what you're getting when you walk through each door (zero load time is great) the first room I walked into had the containment gate meaning I could try it immediately rather than grinding through the level to get to it.
I honestly don't know if it was good that I cleared it early on or not. It's too difficult to say for sure what the best strategy is. But the idea of clearing this game from start to finish when I can't do the first boss does not bode well
