A couple of slabs inset into the surface and a chimnea should do the job, sandstone tends to be the same thickness as decking boards. I hope everyone will pardon me for reposting the picture. Either that or a slightly larger area and a free standing fire grate.

I get that. I just don't see hinges as the part of the plan that's taking it too far.
Colin-B's plan chimnea is a simpler and more elegant solution though.
