The tyre isn't seated dead straight so it's only a light touch on one side, right at the widest edge of the side knobs. But it's only run through little muddy bits where nothing has stayed put. If it was a muddy route I'm not likely gonna risk it. I also don't care about the fork but I don't want to chew up a tyre and have to walk home just because.
My 650x50 is just rubbing the electrical tape on the inside of the fork 'now and then'.
So, if you're only riding in the dry then tight clearances aren't always an issue.
