There’s a great play called “the Rover” by Aphra Ben about a bunch of royalist soldiers hanging out in Spain like England fans at a football tournament while Cromwell does his thing.
It was written by Aphra Behn a female Anglo-Dutch spy/playwright. It’s an interesting part of history we don’t get taught much about.
That’s pretty neat. There were a number of English Catholics serving in the armies of France during the same period also.
I read somewhere that the number one export from Scotland in the 16/17th century was mercenaries and that they are the forebears of noble houses all over Europe.
