  • Next thing to work out - looking for an elegant way to mount my Garmin on a 26mm silver handlebar.

Current proposal is either the mound with rubber straps, or a large rubber shim on a regular 31.8 out-front mount.

  • Just the rubber band mount on the stem works OK.

  • I think shallow carbon rims look the best on these bikes, partially because they would likely have had anodised aluminium rims when new, so the profile and the look is very close, and of course carbon rims don't suffer from braking surface wear that results in the rim turning silver (which looks terrible in my opinion, other opinions are available).

Maximum that looks ok is probably 30mm deep as that was available in alloy in period.

  • Considering period correctness. Shamal, Techno, etc. wheels overlap considerably with the steel competition bike era. Those are around 40mm high and look nice with Ergopower or sti builds.

The contrast between high profile rims and steel tubing can look really nice imo. I'd only go for carbon if it's a MGOOF build or a mid nineties Alu frame build however.

  • I was having the exact same issue deciding between the different depth bora wtos.

In the end I went for the 60s because a) they were a fair bit cheaper, b) they’re faster and I need all the help I can get, and c) almost all the reviews I could find were on the 60s. But tbh, I reckon I would be happy with any of them and they all look fab on skinny steel tubes.

As has been said already, low profile carbon rims is a definite vibe.

  • I had one made by Raceware Direct and it looks fucking terrible. Now I just keep Garmin in my pocket.

Garmin watch is the only answer to this question, if you want to preserve the looks of the bike. Failing that a Garmin 130 is least objectionable, on the bar so it's unobtrusive.

  • Raceware do a 26.0 garmin mount.
    Confusingly it's listed as 25.4, which is a 26.0 plus a shim.

  • Is your Wilier one of the modern ones? You can have your G3 lacing on shallower rims too.

  • Yes - got one of the new frames. Had to work with what's in stock, so 33 it will have to be!

  • Cant upload any more pics for some reason.

  • I'm a bit jealous, I really like those. A ex-colleague of mine was one of the tester for the magazine (pic on post above) and he really enjoyed it.

  • I’m really looking forward to getting it built up. Need a few more bits to turn up.

Mulling getting a paint protection wrap like they put on cars - has anyone used a wrap with any success?

  • Interesting idea. Keen to see results

  • Common in mountain biking, my carbon bike has it.

  • I've heard of people doing it with vinyl (clear) for posh bikes. I'd definitely pay someone with expertise as I'd imagine it to be a right faffy arse of a job.

  • Yeah - my LBS said he knows a guy. But there's also a car wrap dude not far from me. Will research and report.

@Dammit - where did you get yours done?

  • Its very common on MTB’s, but Invisiframe make kits that are cut to specifically fit the make/model of frame, so once all the pieces are applied, it has almost full coverage. There are gaps between the pieces, but when applied correctly the gaps are uniform and it looks fine. (Kind of like how the gaps inbetween panels of cars look when fitted well as opposed to fitted on the piss). You can fit pre cut invisiframe kits yourself if you have a decent eye for detail and patience. If you tend to rush things I’d get someone else to do it.

I don’t think anyone makes kits specific to roadbikes, as there is not much demand, and just so many different makes/models of frame. Apparently these guys do the best job in the UK when it comes to custom cut kits for road bikes: https://www.cyclewrap.co.uk/

I’ve never used them though as I’m not fussy over paint chips. Paint gets chipped. It’s just a fact of life. Just learning to live with it is the best option IMHO. Shit happens, innit.

  • Thanks @hoops. Will give them a call.

Any idea of costs / time?

  • Absolutely no idea. If you want it done well, I doubt it will be quick, or cheap, as with most things.

  • Ain't that the truth 😂

  • I’d avoid car wrappers at all costs if I were you, as I’d put money on them making a total pigs ear of something as intricate and complex as a bike frame.
