  • Have you burnished off the excess gold on both rounds of gold and allowed it to dry fully?

  • I would like our door number put on a small window above our porch door.
"Seven" but I would like it to look good (so rules me out)
Are home, private commissions a thing?
I should probably try and find someone local as it would be a small job (anyone in South Essex?)

  • Yes (at least I think so). First gold I left overnight. Second for a couple of hours.

  • For the second gold did you mix new size? Or use the stuff from the day before?

  • Hey,

So Mansons asked the first question I would have asked, let us see a photo that might help better.
I will say that no-ones gold is totally perfect you'll always sorta see seems where its one sheet on another but burnishing helps it massively so try not to beat yourself up about that also its tricky to do Ive done quite a lot and ive still to even touch the surface of mastering it although id say im very competent now.

@DethBeard Ali (manson) I'm sure might do a home visit he's based in Ldn and essex isn't that far on the train. Id say I'd do it but its certainly not worth my while coming from Glasgow.

  • No I reused the same size. I guess that was a mistake?
Is there any way to remedy it?
I’ll try and get a photo in the morning.

  • The gelatine within the size gets cloudy if older than 5-6 hours, that sounds like the issue.

You could burnish it back again but it might be a start again job if the first gild is really effected. To be honest though I would stand 3ft away and see how it looks. You are never going to be right up close and as @konastab01 said, most gilded finishes have a level of variation, If it’s you own house then a bit of the hand fished nature might be quite nice.

  • Took my sweet time getting to this stage but it's done!
I ended up taking off the original gold and buying more from Jackson's. I don't remember where I got the original stuff from, but (without wanting to sound like I'm blaming my tools) it was definitely what held me back. It was thick and had a weird texture to it that meant it it never lay perfectly flat against the glass. The stuff from Jackson's is noticeably much thinner but went on much better.
Don't get me wrong, there's definitely room for improvement - not least on the reverse as the 1 shot is pretty lumpy as I didn't realise it's meant to be thinned before brushing! But for a first attempt I'm pretty happy. Definitely keen to have a crack at something else.

  • I haven't a clue what I'm talking about (or even why I looked at this thread), but that looks mint to me.

  • Ha, thanks!

  • Looks great!! The handover gold (from jacksons) is great, as is the stuff from Gold leaf supplies.

depends on the batch though, come and gos with the quality, cracking job though!

  • Buy some nazdar and go over the full back it again. One shot chips easy if yiu clean it.

Looks good tho, could you have bought imitation gold? Real gold is never heavy as it only comes in 3 weights and isn’t thick.

As Mansons said handover, Gold leaf supplies or sign supplies Scotland all sell quality gold!

  • You’ll spend a fortune next buying all the gear. Me and Ali have 😂😂😂😂

  • If any would be signwriters want to add something to their portfolio, ‘Captain Spaulding’ needs his name on the side!😂

  • Were are you and we can maybe suggest someone?

  • Are you London based? I would be up for doing something

  • Thanks, I'll check out Nazdar. I was hesitant to go over the back as I don't want to scratch the gold.
I don't remember where I bought the original gold from as it was a long time ago, it definitely wasn't imitation, but may have been gold on base.
The Handover stuff is much better so I'll stick with that.

  • I’m just outside... about to go into roydon marina for the month of May...

  • Real gold is much easier to work with as its loads lighter than imitation or other metals.

  • Been working for the last year or so on Screen Printing techniques that marry in with gilding.

It’s how a lot of gilding work used to be done but the two mediums seem to have separated in most peoples minds

Anyway, I made this last week. It is 23ct gold water gilded with a Boston finish. CMYK screen print with airbrushed details and some hand painted pearlescent elements. I made three that are pretty much exactly the same… the joy of Screen Printing I guess.

The design is an old cigar box that I scanned, redrew and made print ready.

  • They look fantastic

  • Flippin heck those are dope, @Manson7am.

I kind of wanted to ask earlier, maybe now is the time: Done any box lining type stuff on bikes? It’s almost completely gone from bike painting as far as I know (albeit not far)… and the classic bike world badly needs someone to do it for them.

… and I wonder if you’ve ever done anything more decals ish (on the back of pre-outlined clear media or something) for bike frames with these lovely gilt effects … Or even just paint + leaf straight onto keyed painted bikes? I’m totally guessing at how gilt & pigments works as an artform obvs

I always want to one day make up some really blocky lovely lettering for a bike, the kind of stuff like the 3-d looking A on an earlier page

  • Yes, they look amazing!

So many good things on your/their website too

  • Also did you and @stedlocks ever do anything with his boat?

  • I did some gold decal painting for @Hulsroy on one of his bikes.

Was again 23ct gold so would never tarnish but might get a bit bashed though.

Also did some painted elements for Rob Fargo who is on here but can’t remember is @

    Cheers @moocher
