You do. Get some hardboard sheets from builder depot and a load of ring shanked nails delivered and it’s all done in an hour.

is it worth having anything between the hardboard and floorboards? Like a thin underlay?

+1 for hardboard then underlay then carpet. We've done that for a few rooms. Takes longer to cut down the odd shapes more than anything else. Also, if you have creaky pipes this is the time to yank up the floorboards and wrap them in wool.
