• There is a lot of conversation in this thread centered around how boring and trendy bikes are, you see it in the HH threads too. I've been thinking about the kind of monoculture that has been steadily taking over since the mid 2000's (people in Columbus Ohio, London, Cambridge, Pittsburgh and Chicago dress similarly, go to the same kinds of cafes, listen to the same kinds of music, etc.) and it strikes me that even if culture has kind of smoothed out and stagnated in the last 15 odd years, bikes definitely have not. Dangle mugs are already passé! My Longitude is utterly of its time being a bike packing bike with 135mm QR forkends and straight 1 1/8" headtube and it's only 5 years old! Not saying that it's a good or bad thing (these changes do tend to be marketing driven after all) but cycling is pretty dynamic.

  • New bikes last a while so it's important to invent new ways to make people buy (often overpriced) stuff. I guess those influenced by trends have the most disposable income, plus are the easiest to convince?
