  • Cool, looking forward to using it next week when we are down in Cornwall

  • Went lightweight tarp mode last weekend after a hike in the comeraghs, southern Ireland.

, first time tarping and won't be the last! Although I think I'll bring a bivy bag next time, ended up using my drybag as a leg sleeping bag halfway through the night.

  • Just had an email to say it's now live.

  • Nice will take a look

  • If anyone's interested, I have a pair of Scarpa shoes in size 6 (39) that need a new home. Bought last year for a back-up pair on a climbing trip that never happened, but I have too many pairs and these have gone unused... Still lots of life left in the toes. Looking for £40 - collection in Bristol or can post.

  • So lovely

  • Has anybody got a recommendation for a pair of lightweight comfy trousers to wear in the evenings for pub trips etc?

Same question for shoes please. I quite like the look of something like the Vivobarefoot Ultra but I’d rather not splash out £90.

  • I like my Uniqlo linnen trousers, they're pretty light. Decathlon is good for cheap shoes. You can probably also find nice trousers there.

  • Vivobarefoot have a 2nd hand/restored site at https://www.revivo.com/
You might be able to pick up a pair cheaper from there.

  • Cheers - I wish more companies did that sort of thing. Sadly nothing in my size.

I think I’ll take a punt some Chinese branded eBay specials.

  • Thanks - Decathlon do some perfect shoes but sold out in all sizes. I’ll try them for trousers.

  • Decathlon hiking? I love my fjallraven zip off, but they're expensive. Great quality tho. I like zip offs for trips, for the geography teacher look.

  • the geography teacher look

Do you have leather patches on the knees?

  • I know the trousers get a good rep on this thread but has anyone tried the decathlon boots? Some of them look decent, quite light and leather free

  • I've got a pair of Quechua mountaineering boots from years back (12 years plus?) And they're great - still going strong.

Obviously for all that tells you about longevity, no idea if the current range are the same / same manufacturing standards...

  • Are they Quechua or Simond?

Quechua are their hiking and camping brand...

Can highly recommend the current Simond mountaineering boots. Outstanding value for money.

  • These ones.

They were £99 a couple of years ago. Nuts that they've increased by 50%. Still amazing value, would be a bargain at £250 imho.

  • Quechua, but to be fair they're not fully rigid but enough for crampons so all purpose rather than technical mountaineering. Have had them up to 5,200 metres though

Edit: got height wrong and sounded like I was exaggerating to sound cool

  • I really wish I had some hybrids like that. 10mi approaches are no fun with rigid boots on. Have been eyeing up a pair of lightweight La Sportivas half crampon boots recently.

And then I remember it's unlikely I'll be back in the Alps while there's a pandemic on so whatever.

  • The Simond clothing is actually pretty stylish.

I picked myself up a few base and mid layers last night including some nice merino but Decathlon have got a serious stock shortage at the moment. I suppose that’s down to everyone staying at home for holidays and going camping.

  • Anyone rushing out to bag all the Ethels?

  • I've got a real soft spot for Thorpe Cloud. Its almost slap bang in the middle of one of my oldest friend's farm and I spent significant chunks of my childhood being mischievous in various forests that overlook it.

It used to feel like the highest mountain to me when I was a littlun.

  • Tell you what. Grough is full of trolls nowadays. Some of the comments on that article.

    Yeah, yeah. NRTC...

  • Sad news.

Emma Roca Rodriguez died from cancer today, aged 47

She was a world cup ski mountaineer, sky runner, firefighter, lecturer in biochemistry and biomechanics, wife and mother of three.

    A rare human being.
