I was bought a Kartel Morris by my partner (https://www.kartel.co.uk/collections/morris-all/products/morris-gunmetal-white-flat-black-strap). It seems to match your description and I really like it - but I don't know if it passes the horological know-how of everyone here.
@Regal I'm actually curious about your thoughts on the typeface used. I'm not an expert in these things but I really like the look of it. You seem to be the expert of these things so I'm curious what you think of it.

Helson Metropolis
Junghans Form C (quartz at that price bracket)
and whatever Timefactors have in that budget.

No objections from me. It has a nice industrial / instrument kind of vibe.
I just thought of another candidate - the silver/white dial version of my Paulin Neo:

Though I imagine it would be a fair wait until the next batch (in the region of three months I would guess).

All these are 37-38mm and automatic.

Great suggestions

Are you looking for quartz, mechanical, automatic? or dont really care?
Hadn’t thought about it! I do like the idea of not using a battery.
There are so many good suggestions above, I really like all of them, which is a growing problem.
I couldn’t find much on the Smiths Everest Expedition, real mixed search results and some were in the thousands.

The shop opens for orders periodically, you have to wait and get in quickly. I think you sign up for the newsletter to find out.
Re: mechanical vs quartz, you have to accept that the accuracy will be much worse with a mechanical movement. It will also need periodic servicing at a watchmaker, but probably less frequently than you would have to change a battery. On the other hand, mechanical movements are a lot more interesting, if you like that sort of stuff.
I would tend to assume that a Seiko movement would be quieter and more robust in the long term than a Miyota one. Miyota are one of the cheapest options for a small brand. Swiss movements (eg ETA, Sellita) are unlikely to be found in sub-£500 watches.

Tissot might have a few worth looking at too - you can squeeze a quartz or automatic movement out of them:
Tissot Everytime Swissmatic (just in case you were in any doubt that it was a Swiss automatic) - https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1094071603100.html
Tissot Gentleman (quartz ) - https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1274101603100.html
Timex go a tiny bit bigger but they've got some great options.
The Marlin's in budget and 40mm - https://www.timex.co.uk/marlin-40mm-automatic-leather-strap-watch/Marlin-40mm-Automatic-Leather-Strap-Watch.html?dwvar_Marlin-40mm-Automatic-Leather-Strap-Watch_color=Brown-Silver-Tone&cgid=marlin-automatic#start=1I really like the Giorgio Galli one (bit over budget and 41mm but got to be worth a look...) - https://www.timex.co.uk/giorgio-galli-s1-automatic-41mm-soft-synthetic-rubber-strap-watch/Giorgio-Galli-S1-Automatic-41mm-Soft-Synthetic-Rubber-Strap-Watch.html?dwvar_Giorgio-Galli-S1-Automatic-41mm-Soft-Synthetic-Rubber-Strap-Watch_color=Stainless-Steel-Black-Silver-Tone&cgid=mens-automatic
I think the Timex American Documents is a looker too but it's £425 and 41 mm...

The Swissmatic movement is basically the Swatch Sistem51, ie mostly plastic, machine-assembled and not designed to be serviceable, so I wouldn’t put too much value on it. One of the new £200-ish Seiko 5s is a better watch in every department IMO, especially if you want something that’s going to last.

You rotate it so N aligns with North then you know where South, East and West are, obviously

Nautimar
I fleetingly saw this... Thought it was a cruel joke. Made me sick, I ran away. Like traumatic memory you've dredged it back to the surface.
What is that abomination?!?

• #54543
That Nautimar has given me font anxiety. Me!

Wouldn’t it be called something more like a Nautioak? Doesn’t make sense to use one model name and the brand name of the other.

or anything else from Two Stitch, they're my favourite leather straps at the moment. They're made to order so e.g. you can have the stitching in any colour you want at no extra cost.
Admittedly not the cheapest, but the watch is worth it IMO.

This is correct.
Altho NaughtiOak sounds too good.
Patimar?
cant go wrong with the Hamilton field, at 10mm thick its also nice and slim for smaller wrists. It's on my list to buy.
