It didn't look good when I had a peek yesterday when he was about 6 hours in, was a couple of clicks down on the average speed at that point.
He could probably have packed sooner as, at that point it was clear he couldn't do it. It's unlikely that you can get back once you get significantly down on target - and psychologically very hard to be behind target (if there is one thing I learned from doing a few long time trials it is that).
