Even custom build can be a bit janky. I think it all depends on the room. We got one built in our bedroom when we first moved in, I'm not wild about it, build quality is great and all that but not quite in keeping with the rest of the house. Still a better option spacewise than a standalone wardrobe tho'...

I think that bedroom furniture is just trickier to design in a way that suits lots of people’s needs. It’s why the customisable Vitsoe style stuff is popular bc it can be adapted to all types of requirements. Beds and tables are all pretty much of a muchness size and shape wise.
Someone like Jon Grant does nice stuff - think he did a black Valchromat wardrobe a while ago that looked mint. Or something in Richlite

Sure, a table/chair is easier to update- Cheaper to make new designs etc. We have old built in wardrobes in bedrooms that a simple coat of paint and handle change have worked. Probably just get another old Stag or the like chest of draws to do the folded stuff.

We had our hanging clothes on rails (designed for walk in wardrobes) precisely to reduce moth risk. Moths prefer dark spaces. The shoulders need hoovering regularly though!
For drawer we bought a vintage haberdashery cabinet with glass sliding doors and wooden open-fronted drawers.
This replaced built in wardrobes which really made the room seem small

I used to have a collection of trainers that I kept in their boxes. About half yours, but even so it was enough that I could decide to wear a 2 year old pair and it would look box fresh.
The trouble was that the glues used by Puma (and all the others) didn’t last, and some expensive and lovely shoes that I had barely worn fell to bits.
So don’t store them, wear them until they are knackered

I wear pretty much all of them on rotation, some have "talking" soles so yeah, rock em don't stock em.

...finally some pics of the finished article, was stalled the last two weekends due to running out of cloth tape the first and it not getting delivered on time for the second..
Excuse the pictures by my Chinese iPhone copy, but we're very happy; it's a really satisfying result!

..and before you ask and on the previous subject of string shelves/furniture, the wall unit is a 60s GDR sybille/babette string system models after the Scandinavian examples from the 50s.
Really happy with it, got a good price and it's an early model with real cherrywood veneer instead of the later plastic print ones. Plenty of work spent on that one too, but already almost forgot about that so let's not start.

Just moved into a new house with a dedicated office room and I’m struggling with sorting some nice office furniture while trying my best to make it not look like an IKEA showroom, and could do with some guidance from those that might have more experience. I’ve been full time wfh since 2019 so can justify a nicer desk and chair that won’t make me want to gouge my eyes out. Maybe €1k (+/-10%).
I do love the eames desk but it’s totally way over budget for desk + chair. The Normann Copenhagen desk and Hay design CPH desks have caught my eye, but I’m wondering if they’ll look crap with a widescreen monitor on top and cables everywhere. I’m also trying to come to terms with the price being driven by the #design and not the raw materials, though at least it looks like the base and legs of the Hay desk are oak.
The other thing is that I guess it would be pointless not to pair them with similarly aesthetically pleasing chairs but are the likes of the normann Copenhagen hyg and hay chairs backbreaking for a days work?
Like I said I’m trying to avoid working in an IKEA showroom but maybe it really is the sensible way to go and save cash for nice furniture elsewhere? Vintage isn’t really an option as the choice in Ireland is pretty poor and shipping from UK isn’t an option.

I would put your money into the chair. Consider a used HM Aeron (or new if you can stretch to it).
I'd also recommend a sit / stand desk if you're full time wfh.
Personally, the desk is the one piece of furniture that should always be function over form considering how much time you spend at it.

Really recommend Knoll Life chairs which you can often pick up for really good prices second hand/refurbished. Though not sure whether as easy in Ireland.

A desk is largely a desk, even as a #buyer. Just kitted out my office with two bargain basement Ikea Bekants and they're fine. Spend your money on the chair, and go for comfort. That said, my pose chair is still in storage and I'm sitting on a HATTEFJÄLL right now and it is also 'fine'. I think I might even like it more than my old one but it's probably only because it doesn't have 10 years of home work wear on it.
This place does currently look like an Ikea show room and it pains me a little, but I spend most of the day staring at a screen (and my £350 desk lamp, so I don't forget who I am) and then I lock it up and walk away at the end so whatevs. A surprise Ikea win is the FJÄLKINGE; super sturdy, posey Blum runners for the drawers. Wanted HAY new order, couldn't face the price tag.

Also sad that while Ikea sell VITTSJÖ shelving it's not a wall-hung 606 knockoff.

Anyone know of any retailer doing discounts on Tolix stools. Not the clone/copy/fake/whateveryoucallit ones. Would like six.

I suppose one thing I should have mention is that we’re doing a wall to wall ikea pax system (one full width with doors for coats with three storage drawers, and two half width with doors with 5 shelves each, and 4 or 5 exposed free hanging shelves), so I was hoping the desk side of my office would have been nice to keep anti-ikea, but the reality is ikea are hard to beat for the sensible stuff like storage and desks. I actually had a JÄRVFJÄLLET chair in London and it was fine, so maybe that’s my best bet again.
There is a used HM specialist in Dublin but doesn’t appear to be anything similar for knoll, nor any used ones for sale.

I'd have a look at used office furniture on ebay - you can usually fine decent usm haller, herman miller, vitra, muuto, HAY stuff as this is often specced as part of office fit outs.
I got a usm haller sideboard and Vitra pad chair for a fraction of rrp and barely used this way

Can't recommend WantDon'tWant highly enough. It's recycled high-end office furniture. In the past they've blown hot and cold with selling to non-businesses but they've always sorted me out, especially if you spend a few hundred with them.

I’d love to get used stuff for sure but Ireland it’s absolutely pants for that sort of thing, and nobody really uses ebay here oddly enough.

That looks awesome but shipment to Ireland plus getting hit with import duty and vat probably brings them close enough to rrp by the time they’re landed in my house now
That’s what I think, love the idea nightmare in reality, our cat would probably see it as a climbing frame also.
Every modern day chest of drawers just doesn’t look good either. Think custom wardrobe and some vintage draws maybe the way to go.
Funny that tables, chairs and beds seem to be constantly designed well and updated but draws and wardrobes just aren’t
