A lot of "oak aged" stuff isn't aged in barrels, it just has bags of oak chips dunked into a massive vat. Definitely for wine, probably some whisky too.
Compass box got in trouble for this a while back- addition of internal staves into a cask no longer renders it a cask and so cannot be called Scotch.
