it's actually very odd that Fender have never done a signature model...
They must have wanted to and offered - there can't be many Fenders still being played around that have more significance.
In his case I don't think it was originally a cheap pawn shop find or anything, but regardless I can easily imagine him not wanting to participate in some hugely expensive custom shop project and / or thinking his shouldn't be replicated.

Yeah I really wonder. I can see some artists not feeling that an expensive custom shop signature model vanity project sits right with them, eg Springsteen’s “working man” / blue collar image in particular. There are a lot more signature guitars being made at the lower end of the price scale these days though, like the J Mascis jazzmaster. Maybe the money isn’t right (probably more likely the case with Keef). Who knows.
That was body glorious! I loved the intro but then I have been in a band that routinely started shows with ten minutes of ambient atmospheric stuff...
