I’ve just been looking for a friend with an even tighter budget. For fair weather cycling largely.
Vitus do a rim brake bike with Claris for £550 that’s probably actually fine. If they did one with 105 it’d be a winner. The next interesting thing was this with Spyre brakes, Sora (and maybe cartridge bearing wheels ... not sure).

My brother is looking for a decent, new (otp) road bike for under a grand.
I know nothing about road bikes so thought I’d ask here if anyone can give me any of their knowledge about what would be good for him to go for?
He’s planning to ride it around the countryside on backroads, on nice days and he’s likes goin fast.
