I (well the band I was in) once supported Madness at one of those post-racing gigs at Ascot. A total sea of Fred Perrys and porkpie hats giving us the finger was a memory I shall cherish the rest of my life.

To be fair most of the Madness and Specials gigs I worked on were mostly a 50something audience who'd managed to get coke from somewhere.

It was never fun.

Probably because that's how old their original audience is now and coke is more easily available than speed. Like every genre, some fans never expand their tastes and stay trapped in a idealised moment that never really existed.
